Chapter 8 by duskdawn duskdawn

He's got a heavy accent compared to everyone else in town

Becoming a town guard

Having passed what looked like a barracks on your way to the church, you head there, hoping that you can judge a book by its cover. It isn't long before you come to a stop in front of a slightly large shack between a small archery range and what you can claim to be a smithy, if the banging on an anvil is anything to go by. You knock on the door, quickly getting an answer when it opens.

"Who are you and what do you want?" The young woman, no older than her mid-twenties (if that), in front of you is covered in leather armor, only her head left open. She looks you up and down, almost like she's sizing you up.

"I, I was told I could find work here. Garth sent me." You point back in the direction you came from.

"Ah, looking to become a guard?" She crosses her arms, sizing you up again. Before nodding to your scar. "I see you've fought a hornet. How would you say you did?"

"Pretty good, since I killed them." You shrug, trying to downplay your victory. Half the reason I won was probably that they were focused on Kara and Connor.

"Did you now? Got any proof?" She cocks an eyebrow.

"Uh...no. Not on me. I left them all in the forest."

"Uhuh, sure you did. You bring me proof that you killed a hornet and I'll give you a proper try-out. Until then, stop wasting my time." She shuts the door in your face.

"Okay..." Shit, I forgot to use God's Eye on her. You stand there for a second, thinking. Well, if I need proof, it's really not that far away. You walk off toward the clearing you entered town from.

Within minutes, you are already flying back toward your crater, searching for any of the dead hornets. Having time to think, you realize that you should probably look for the one you stabbed. You're trying to present yourself as a Knight so people don't question why you're not using magic. Polymorph does make you 'powerless', after all. Unless you reveal yourself again, you won't be able to rely on your abilities, so it's all going to be skill...of which you have none with actual weapons. Video games make it so much easier to do all this...

You land at the edge of your crater, now wondering where to even start. After another minute of thought, you decide to walk down the path you ran, starting from where you had crashed with Connor in your arms. The path is 'neatly' defined by crunched and bent and broken branch and bush, until you reach the the corpse of the hornet who stabbed you. You remember a second and third one aren't too far off, but one corpse will do...if only it had its lance so you could stab it.

It looks kind of weird now that you take the time to look at it. You'd never taken the time to study hornets on Earth, but it looks freaky to see something normally tiny to be the same size as you. You're glad to be killing these things instead of fighting alongside them.

You search the area a bit more, finding the other two hornets and dragging them back to the first one. It's surprisingly easy, but then you remember your 700% boost from Pure Land. 8x stronger, huh? Taking one of their lances, you awkwardly stab all three in their thoraxes like a shish kebab, only barely struggling to lift them up. If nothing else, this will help me figure out the radius of Pure Land, even if I end up struggling to get all these back.

You lift off again, holding the lance with both hands so you don't accidentally drop the lance when you leave Pure Land. To your surprise, the radius is pretty far, and you don't feel the lance get heavier during your flight.

When you land, however, you realize it's probably not a good idea for a newbie to waltz around carrying three hornets. You slide two of them off in the nearby brush and head into Riverbend with the remaining hornet-on-a-stick resting on your shoulder. Because it's a small town and the bugs were close by, you end up approaching the barracks again in well under an hour. You spot the woman from before in the archery range walking as she shoots arrow after arrow into the targets. Before she reaches the final target, she spots you carrying the lance and hornet and looses her arrow early, missing the target entirely.

She seems to curse herself under her breath as she glances at the last target. "I wasn't expecting you back so soon, or at all. I guess I owe you that job after all."

"Oh, so no tryout?" You raise an eyebrow.

"You're carrying a hornet and a lance and you're not so much as out of breath from wherever you got it from. And I don't know if you could tell, but we don't exactly have a lot of guards around here." She slips her bow across her back as she approaches you, her hand outstretched. "Camilla, but it's Captain when we're on duty, alright Private?"

You take her hand and shake it. "Dusk, but I guess when we're on duty it'll be Private."

"You got that right, Private. Come on, I need to see what you're made of." She waves for you to follow her, and you do.

Riverbend wants you! To join the army.
