Chapter 12
by M2J N7
Do you manage to stay off of the Justice 's radar?
Barely
Since Kathy has her own vehicle, she quickly agrees to take you out job hunting. You apply at a number of places before you and her settle down at a coffee shop near where Jennifer and Allyson's apartment is. She orders a chai latte while you order a drink known as a revolver with is a rather large ice coffee with six shots of expresso in it.
"Something you said last night, James, had me curious," Kathy stated.
"Oh?" you reply.
"You were talking about there being different types of psychics," Kathy said. "I was curious to know more about them and the Astral Plane."
You close your eyes to concsiously pull up the knowledge that may or may not have been yours at some point. "What would you like to know?"
"I dunno... Things?" Kathy replies with a shrug and a vague gesture.
You sigh at her imprecises answer. "Okay... Bare bones basics: There are for main types- telepaths, telekinetics, psionics and diviners. Telepaths can 'hear' or 'read' thoughts and implant suggestions. Telekinetics can move stuff with their mind. Psionics can create astral objects and diviners are capable of 'seeing'- for lack of a better term. The more powerful the connection to the Astral Plane, the more powerful the psychic is. Telepaths are the most powerful of all psychics, to the point that their connection is so strong that they are a fully integrated part of the Astral Plane and are capable of bending it to their will. Diviners, on the other hand, have the weakest connection to it and are more or less outsiders looking in."
"So since you'r a telepath does that mean you can't become a diviner?" She asks with great interest.
"Mostly." You inform her. "There's a lot of crossover when you get into subtypes and it is possible that I may develop minor precog abilities, but I will never be a true diviner."
"Precog?" she asks.
"Precognitive," you elaborate.
"So what about psionics and telekinetics? Which one of them are stronger?" Kathy questions further.
"It doesn't quite work that way for them. Your average telekinetic or psionic may roughly have the same connection to the Astral Plane. Where they differ is that telekinetics use brute **** to harness their power, where psionics are more about finesse. But that isn't an exact explanation since many psychic subtypes and abilites take traits from each of the four main types. A telekinetic barrier, for example, can theoretically block psychic based and physical attacks, and possibly prevent someone from being... 'Divined'... Though for it to do all that would largely depend on the power and skill of the one putting up the barrier."
While the two of you are enjoying your drinks, none other and Maxwell Swift enters, causing a flurry of conversation to start up. A few of the bolder patrons and employees even dare to approach him for autographs, which he simply smiles and takes in strides. The two of you, by silent mutual consent, decided to put your discussion on your powers off for another time.
Kathy notices you eyeing Maxwell speculatively and teases you. "Thinking about getting his autograph?"
"Thinking about reading him actually," you state.
Her eyes widened at your daring. "Are you sure you want to do that?"
"Better safe than sorry," you argue. She clearly doesn't agree that your next course of action is actually the safe road, but she doesn't argue with you further on the subject.
Since Maxwell is busy dealing with his fanbase, you close your eyes in an attempt to feret out the full purpose of his investigation and presence here. You flinch and hiss in pain. With more skill you might have been able to read his mind, but, as you should have anticipated, his thoughts are far too fast for you to read more than a few bits and peices at a time. Due to the massive migraine you're now currently sporting, making sense of what you did get is going to be next to impossible.
"Are you all right?" the question asked wasn't spoken by Kathy, but by your object of study. You chance a quickly glance at Kathy, but she's frozen with fear and trying not to show it.
"Caffiene Migraine," you grit out. "Thus my need to self-medicate." You lift up the beverage which is only a quarter of the way gone.
"You might want to switch to decaf," Maxwell says jokingly.
"I'll keep that under advisement," you lie. Through the haze of your own pain, you know you need a plausible explanation for Kathy's nervousness that doesn't include admitting that you tried and failed to read his mind. So you mentally prod your sister's cousin telepathically.
'Autograph...' Is all you're able to get out.
Luckily she catches on. "Oh, ah... M-Mr. Swift..."
"Max," he replied with an infuriatingly charming half smile.
She fumbles through her purse and pulls out a worn notepad and pen. "A-Autograph...?"
"Sure thing," Maxwell replied easily. He makes some more small talk before picking up his coffee and going on his way.
"Fuck! That hurt..." you say in a low tone that only Kathy can hear you.
"What happened?" she inquires.
"Not here," you say as you let her guide you back to her car.
What's next?
Power
Are you a Hero or Villain?
You are the new Metahuman on the block. What you do with your powers is up to you.
