Chapter 54

How does the fight go?
Bad.
“I got this, sister.” Leandra says and block the fireball with her shield. The spell is absorbed by some enchantment. ‘Of course.’ Uklag thinks and prepares his next attack. Leandra isn’t about to let that happen though and charges at him with almost inhuman speed.
Uklag finds himself unable to finish his spell instead opting for a narrow parry with his staff. The sword clashes into indestructible glass, the shock leaving the mages hands numb. Leandra pulls back, covers down, then her shield slams into his chest with immense strength and send him tumbling a few feet back.
Wanting to finish him off the warrior attempts to jump after Uklag, but finds herself frozen to the ground. With a smile the warlock hurls a strike of lightning at Leandra. “As if it would be so easy.” She mocks him and shatters her bindings in an act of brute strength before dodging to the side.
The lightning strike hits a guards instead, who goes down with a small scream. No one else in the formation even seems to care, the iron discipline of the Estaran army has prepared them for loss.
Again Leandra storms at Uklag who narrowly dodged a vertical strike. In an attempt of hit and run tactics Uklag throws spells of all elements at the rightfully arrogant warrior as he retreats. Shield raised Leandra blocks or dodges them without taking any visible damage, following the warlocks every move until he literally has him against the wall.
‘I dislike where this is headed.’ Uklag thinks, ‘If only I had more room and a means of escape then…’ A grin spreads across his face as a plan forms in his head. “How about we take this somewhere else?” he asks and freezes the warrior’s feet to the ground again before running directly towards the **** that is blocking the exit.
“Your parlour tricks won’t work twice.” Leandra laughs and frees herself in a matter of seconds. Not that it matters much to Uklag, he only needed a bit of time to concentrate power into a single spell. A blue fireball explodes from the tip of his staff that causes the soldiers to at the very least form a tunnel to not get hit by the obviously dangerous spell.
The ball crashes into the door that had been closed behind them and blasts it open in a huge explosion. Dust and ash fill the air and Uklag storms right through it and out of the vault.
He feels a gust of air as Leandra takes a strike at his back, only the suddenly obscured vision causing her to miss as he runs through the corridors of the building. Once he has exited the cloud he starts to randomly fire spells at his pursuer, only meant to slow her down as he runs up a flight of stairs.
Random guardswoman try to stop him on his way but unlike the general they are easy picking and simply get killed in whatever way Uklag can think of. “Stop, you coward.” Leandra shouts after him after hacking apart a wall of ice that has suddenly appeared in her way. “I’d rather not.” Uklag shouts back and, turning on his heels, throws another lightning strike at her.
Again the shield absorbs it with ease, whatever that enchantment is must have quite some power. The shield lowers to reveal the arrogant grin of the warrior. Uklag can’t see it however, he has started running again already. ‘The second she gets me into melee I lose.’ He thinks to himself as he breaks open another door with a fireball.
Sunlight greets him and he is blinded for a moment, but he has no time to let that stop him. Running down the stairs and into the huge courtyard of the fort Uklag looks at a giant wooden gate. It is covered over and over in enchantments and runes, some new some old, and brims with power acquired over the ages. ‘Perfect’ Uklag thinks and turns back to the door he has just burst out off, ready to make his final stand.
Smoke is still rising from the explosion and keeps Uklag from clearly seeing what is going on inside. A shadow suddenly bursts through the smokescreen with such speed that it follows after it as it rushes through the courtyard with a valiant war cry.
Again the sword clashes against the staff, mere inches away from Uklag’s face. “Now I got you, sly snake.” Leandra triumphantly exclaims. A one sided exchange of attacks ensues as Leandra uses her superior skills in melee combat to play with Uklag like a cat plays with its food.
Then finally she uses a wide opening in the mages defence to drive her sword through the mages body. Uklag only manages to put his hand on her head for a moment in response before the blade is pulled back and he goes to the ground, bleeding from the grave wound in his stomach.
“A good workout, mage.” Leandra says with honest contempt as she walks around the mage with the relaxed attitude of someone who is sure of their victory. “But you could never hope to outclass somebody like me. I, Leandra of the house Ashmark, have been raised and trained by only the finest woman of this country, making me and my sister second only to the queen herself. You should have known you place as a man and…”
Uklag starts chuckling, despite the pain that simple motion brings him. Leandra stops, gate in the back and looks down at the mage. “What is so funny?” she demands to know. “I heard you liked falling into monologues.” The warlock explains. “I have been trying to influence you with Alteration for this whole battle but your mind is really well fortified. However reinforcing an already existing flaw, when I have an opportunity to touch your head nonetheless, is very easy.”
Uklag smiles brightly, triumph in his eyes as he raises his staff at her. The glass is almost bursting with unreleased power. ‘How did I not see that?’ the general asks herself in terror and readies herself to block whatever the warlock is about to unleash.
“Aclysium.” Uklag says and the conditions of his enchantment are met. The sun is rivalled by a flash of electricity as days’ worth of magical energy are released in a single moment. The thunder crashes into the shield and Leandra is pushed back by the excessive **** as her shield is slowly turned to ash by the endless **** of energy.
The energy rages through her as her shield gives in completely and she falls to her ground as darkness envelopes her. His foe defeated Uklag raises the staff at the gate. The enchantment prove a bit more resistant but even them give in to the storm of destruction eventually.
By the time the cataclysmic current subsides the gate has collapsed into thousands of burning pieces all over the courtyard. “Better be honoured.” Uklag says and breaks down, “It will take months to recharge that, maybe even years.” He blinks a few times and stares into the sky.
“Somebody better rescue ME this time, I am going to take a nap.” The warlock says and falls ****.
Will somebody rescue him?
