Chapter 2 – Putting the Team Together (continued)

Not much had changed in the main room of the guild hall. Most the faces were different, but they were engaging in about the same types of conversations in much the same manner as when Kaylen had arrived with Aranni earlier that morning.

Kaylen and Alanthea took seats while Tyrell went into the backroom and Marius stood against the wall nearby. The guildmaster returned after a minute with a small stack of parchment. “We tend to keep a small collection of low risk requests for new adventurers to cut their teeth on.” He explained, “It looks like one of these four has already been accepted, and you don’t meet the prerequisites for the second one. That leaves these two. A small tribe of goblins has been spotted in the caves near a mining town in the eastern part of the kingdom, and some local woodsmen have seen signs of a growing nest of giant spiders.”

“I don’t know much about giant spiders, but I’ve heard some things about goblins. Is it true they have very few females?” Kaylen asked.

“That’s correct.” Tyrell confirmed while turning one of the sheets of parchment back around so he could read its contents, “And now that you mention it, that would present an unusual challenge for your team which consists mostly of women, wouldn’t it?”

“What do you mean, why should that make such a difference?”

“They would likely try to **** us.” Alanthea said, reminding them of her presence.

“The sister is correct. Blunt, but correct.” Tyrell agreed. “Goblin tribes with no females of their own need to mate with females of other species in order to reproduce. Being faced with multiple females in your group could send them into something of a frenzy, making them more difficult to defeat. That doesn’t mean you couldn’t handle them, but I don’t think I can in good conscience send you to face them completely untested. So that just leaves the spiders.” He pushed the final sheaf of parchment across the table to Kaylen, and he picked up the very small stack reading over the details of the mission in question.

“Well, I’m sure they won’t be too big a problem for us.” Kaylen assured the guild master.

He glanced at Sister Alanthea, who offered an expressionless nod in response.

Master Norrison stood, and collected the remaining three sheaves of parchment, then extended a hand to Kaylen, “Very well, good luck on your first adventure, Adept Gallowglass.”

“Thank you.” Kaylen shook the man’s hand. “I look forward to reporting our success.”

“Probably won’t be me who takes your report. But I’m sure I will see you around. Farewell.”

“Farewell.” Kaylen agreed, and released Tyrell’s hand. The guild master turned away to return to whatever regular duties he had, and Kaylen turned to his latest recruit, who had stood when they had. “Shall we?”

She nodded, and led the way out of the adventurer’s guild.

Time to get the whole party together?
