BOOK 1: WHISPERS, CHAPTER 9: Getting Help
The frigid air of her hometown of Wolf Cove blew across Korra’s face, the current Avatar sitting at the edge of an icey cliffside as she sat in the snow with her legs crossed and her eyes closed, medidating on her current predicament.
What happened at the library in the Spirit World shook Korra to her core, not only because of what she did to herself in such a sacred place, but also because of what the disgusting book that she left on the other side being there to begin with implied: someone, somewhere was powerful enough to corrupt the Spirit World and it’s beings, and she had no idea what.
She felt like she had sat in that same spot for hours, the sun setting in the distance as she could feel the already chilly breeze become even colder. She breathed in and out, hoping to relax herself enough that she’d come up with an idea.
“You know, you don’t have to do that to contact us.”
She recognized that voice. It was Aang, her predecessor, standing behind her with a coy smile on his face at his own joke. Korra smiled back and stood up from her spot, relief washing down her face.
”Aang”, she said with a warm look of gratitude at the past Avatar’s appearence. “I’m so glad to see you.”
”I’m glad to see you too.”
Even with the bright smile on her face, Aang could still detect something was wrong. Korra was looking at him like he was a completely different person, and he thinks he knows why.
”I’ve been meaning to talk to you, Aang. There’s something weird going in the Spirit World, and with me.”
Aang put on a serious expression. “Yeah, Kyoshi told me about your… dreams.”
Korra blushed as she continued with her explanation. “That’s not all, though. When I went to the library in the Spirit World, I found a book, a twisted, dark book full of lies, and-“
”You mean this?”
Aang reached behind his back and revealed the green paperback that Korra had dropped in the library. Fear filled Korra’s face as she looked at the book again, a small tingly feeling popping up below her waist.
”Wan Shi Tong gave it to me, telling me it was mortal filth that you apparently brought him.“
Her face grew redder. “That’s not true! It was already there when I got there! He showed it to me!”
Aang looked down. “I know. Something has been corrupting the Spirit World lately. A dark, evil ****, one that I’ve never faced. But you may have.”
Korra raised her eyebrows in confusion. “What do you mean?“
The visage of the past Avatar sighed. “Vaatu. He’s returned.”
Korra was speechless. Her face was full of a combiantion of fright, shock and anger. She didn’t even know how to process what she had just been told.
“I don‘t understand“, Korra said with worry in her tone, “how is he back? I defeated him. I saw it with my own eyes, me and Raava.”
Aang walked past the girl and stared at the coast of the icey city. “I don’t know. He must have left a piece of his being on another host before he was defeated. That‘s what I and the other Avatars speculate, anyways.”
“But I don’t get it. Why would Vaatu put a book like that in the library? Why mess with my dreams?”
The bald spirit turned to his left to look at the girl. “We think he has allied himself with a human male, one with more morbid desires then what Unalaq had. Though what those are, I can’t say.“
Korra still looked puzzled. “What should I do, then?”
”Gather your allies. If I had to guess, you’ll be going up against a new enemy very soon. One that you may not be prepared for.”
Korra nodded and bowed her head. “Thank you, Aang. I don’t know what I would’ve done without your wisdom.”
Aang waved his hand in embarrasment. “You don’t have to thank me, Korra. I’m helping you for the sake of the world.”
With that last sentence, Aang vanished out of thin air. With a new determined spirit inside of her, Korra started running back towards civilization, needing her friends to devise a plan on how to deal with this new threat.
