Awkward Party

Three sudden bangs on your door makes your jump. It pauses for a second and then three more.

“Yeah okay give me a second.” you say sitting up. You make your way to the door, and open it and see your sister Jamie mid knock. She’s wearing the classic tank top and short shorts.

“What?”

“It’s time to eat dweeb.” she says looking over your shoulder “what the hell happened in there?”

You look back and see the aftermath of you and Clara’s tussle.

“I was asleep. The way you were banging on the door I thought the house was on fire.”

You sister smiles at you “Not yet but with dad on the grill you never know.” the two of you share a laugh. “Well let’s get this over with.” your sister says turning around tossing her blonde hair in your face and makes her way down stairs.

You use the bathroom and as your making your way out you run into Clara. The two of you make eye contact, but before you can say anything she quickly looks down and runs downstairs.

“It’s gonna be a long night” you sigh thinking about how the app wouldn’t display her score to you.

You make your way downstairs seeing everyone outside.

“There he is” your mother says smiling at you “now we can get started.”

Your dad starts handing out plates with semi burnt hamburgers and once everyone fixes theirs the way they like it you all sit down to eat. The meal is mostly quiet though. Jamie looks at her phone the entire time and Clara never looks up from her plate. Your mother notices this and asks her if she’s okay.

“Yeah I’m not really feeling great right now” she says her face turning red. You feel a slight guilt in your chest.

After everyone finishes your mother goes back inside and brings out your cake. It’s the classic white on white cake with your name on it. She lights the candles and asks you to make a wish. You blow out the candles not really making any wish and every one sings to you. You smile but your eyes are on your younger sister seeing her all clammed up and not her usual outgoing self is disheartening.

You finish your cake your sisters go back into the house while your dad goes to the shed to get the tarp for the grill.

Alone your mother looks at you “Any idea what was up with Clara she seemed upset about something.”

“We kinda got into a fight this afternoon. I’m gonna try to talk to her tomorrow”

“Okay sweetie I’m sure the two of you will work it out… do you have any plans for tonight?” she asks

“No not really what’s up”

You close your app and run through the shower. You go to your room and get dressed in a simple shirt and gym shorts. Next you go down stairs to the living room. Seeing that the DVD player is gone you head down to the basement.
