Army Of One

The office had a different kind of silence after midnight. During the day, the building was alive with ringing phones, hurried footsteps, and voices competing across rows of cubicles. But now, beneath the cold glow of deep lights, every sound seemed to echo—the hum of a few computers, the ticking of the clock, the faint rustle of papers left behind by a lonely employee.

Madi sat in frustration, the last secretary in an empty floor. Around her were reminders of everything she had promised to finish: sticky notes covering the walls, unfinished reports, unanswered messages on a computer, and a stack of folders filled with deadlines that seemed to multiply faster than she could erase them. She looked over at the office printer, her coffee mug sitting innocuously on the opened top where the papers needed to be scanned.

Madi groaned in confusion. she couldn't even remember which files she was fixing on her screen, or why her drink even sat on the printer when she hadn't touched the big hunk of tech for over an hour.
"Screw this, i'll just do something else." she said to herself after slapping her hands on her mouse and keyboard in frustration.

Just then, the printer activated, as the bright light of the scanner glided across the glass, hitting the coffee mug with a deep blue glow. The young blonde worker could only sigh at yet another waste of paper coming out.

Only this time, a bright flash filled the surrounding area, forcing Madi's eyes shut for a moment. Once it cleared, she looked up, and was quickly astonished.

There now sat 2 coffee mugs on top of the printer, both a dark gray color. Taking a closer look, Madi was even more shocked to find that both mugs were filled with the espresso she had been drinking to stall her sleepiness.

"Wha....?" There was nothing really special about this printer from what Madi could recall. It only arrived at the office this afternoon, so it probably went unnoticed.

As the young lady stares at this new 'addition' to the printer, countless thoughts start filling inside her.

'Hmmm.....I wonder......'
