Chapter 11

What happens next?
Apparently, there's more than one body swap expert in Sunnydale. Who knew?
The next day, the woman whom people knew of as Joyce Summers drove to a very run-down part of downtown Sunnydale and walked into a certain building. Once she got inside, she looked around at the seedy crowd in the waiting room and then finally chose to speak to a young blonde girl who wore way too much makeup even by hooker standards.
"I'm looking for a man named Rack," said the woman called Joyce. "Is he here?"
"Who wants to know?" asked the girl.
"A potential customer," said the woman called Joyce.
The blonde stared at the woman called Joyce for a long while and then asked, "Are you a cop?"
"Of course not," said the woman called Joyce.
"Good," said the girl. "Because Rack has ways of dealing with cops. You have no idea how many undercover folks have tried to bust this place and failed. Plus he did some favors for the former mayor so he has a lot of friends in high places. So if you happen to be planning some kind of sting operation, I'd advise you to go after a safer target. Like the Russian Mafia."
"Hey, I can be pretty dangerous myself," said the woman called Joyce.
She could tell that the girl was secretly laughing at this statement and chose to ignore it.
Instead the woman named Joyce said, "Anyway, I hate cops too. So where is your boss anyway?"
"Right here," said a long-haired man who wore simple clothes.
He stared at the woman named Joyce as if he could see something in her that no one else could and then sneered. "What do you want?"
The woman named Joyce just smiled and took something out of her purse. "You know what that is?"
The man called Rack looked at the object in question and said, "That's a Draconian Katra. And it's broken. The fact that you have one in your possession... explains a lot. So where did you get it?"
"It was a gift," said the woman called Joyce. "Any chance I could get a replacement?"
"I don't know," said the man called Rack. "They're very rare. And very expensive."
"I have money," said the woman called Joyce.
"I'm sure you do," said the man called Rack. "But for how long? How long before the next of kin of that woman whose body you so obviously stole catch on and make you give the money back? I have enough complications to deal with in my business without getting involved in another Catherine Madison mess."
"Catherine Madison?" asked the woman called Joyce. "Who's Catherine Madison?"
"A former customer of mine," said the man called Rack. "Used to be the most dependable as well. Then she got obsessed with the idea of switching bodies with somebody -- and well, that plan didn't end well. Rumor has it that she either died or ran off to Mexico. No one knows for sure. I tried finding out because the woman still owed me a ton of money for magic supplies but the only trace of her I ever found was that damn cheerleading trophy of hers that they used to keep in the trophy case of the old high school before it exploded. I still keep it on my desk to remind me of the folly of dealing with certain customers who are interested in body swaps because while I generally consider it to be none of my business what you do with the stuff that I sell, I do resent having to waste my time with people who are potential deadbeats."
"So this body swap thing Catherine Madison talked about?" asked the woman called Joyce. "Was it really that unsuccessful?"
The man called Rack shrugged. "Well, the spell itself worked just fine, according to Catherine, but unfortunately there were unforeseen complications."
"And do you happen to have a copy of that spell?" asked the woman called Joyce.
"I might," said the man called Rack. "For a price. I'm still not sure I want to deal with you but I can tell from that look in your eye that you're not likely to stop with me if I turn you down so I might as well make some money off of you while I can."
"So how much money are we talking about here?" asked the woman called Joyce.
And when the man called Rack told her his price, the woman called Joyce just smiled.
