Which sounds best right now?
Anyone else?
You lean back in the heavy oak chair, crossing your arms as you scrutinize Sir Dietrich. "Is that truly the entire list, Lord Dietrich? Or are you withholding candidates you deemed improper for my eyes?"
Sir Dietrich hesitates, his thumb nervously tracing the wax seal on his discarded parchment. He shifts his weight, clear discomfort clouding his stern features. "No, Sire... not entirely. There are indeed other women of notable blood or wealth."
"But?" you prompt, raising an eyebrow.
"But there are those I did not include due to... certain complications," Dietrich admits, adjusting his velvet mantle. "Complications regarding propriety, scandal, or political risk that could ruffle the feathers of the court and the Bishops."
"Such as?" You gesture toward the desk. "Give me the list, Dietrich. All of it. I prefer to know every piece on the board, good or bad."
Dietrich sighs deeply, reaching into the leather satchel at his hip to produce a second, smaller bundle of vellum. He clears his throat and unrolls it with evident reluctance.
"Very well, Sire. If you insist on seeing the full breadth of options, here are the women I left out."
"First, there is Lady Agnes of Waldenburg. She is a young widow, barely twenty-one years of age. Her late husband, Count Bernhard, met his end fighting alongside your late brother during the eastern border raids. She commands a formidable border fortress and holds the total devotion of her late husband's garrison. However, marrying a fresh widow whose husband fell in your family's war carries a certain emotional and political weight that could raise questions among the northern lords."
Dietrich shifts to the next line of scrawled ink. "Then we have Lady Isolde. She is the natural daughter of the late Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights. Though illegitimate in the eyes of the Church, her father left her a vast personal fortune in timber, salt mines, and coin, along with deep ties to the military orders. Her bastard status makes a royal marriage scandalously unorthodox, yet her wealth could comfortably fund your armies for a decade."
He glances up at you cautiously before continuing to the third entry. "A most unusual offer has arrived from the far south, well beyond the Mediterranean. Princess Sabella of the Solomonic line, from the Christian Empire of Abyssinia in East Africa. Her homeland is exceptionally wealthy in gold, spices, and trade access, and crucially, it is an ancient Christian realm, not a Muslim kingdom. Her emissaries seek a grand maritime trade alliance. She would bring unbelievable riches and novel influence, but her foreign customs and distant origins would shock the traditionalists at court."
Dietrich rubs the bridge of his nose before reading the fourth name. "Next is Duchess Beatrix of Upper Swabia. She was a close childhood friend and confidante to your late mother, the Queen. She is thirty-six years old, nearly old enough to be your mother herself. She controls an immense, stable, and strategically vital domain right in the heartland of the Confederation. A marriage to her would grant you instant, rock-solid stability, but her age means the likelihood of producing a healthy heir is considerably lower."
"Fifth on this hidden list is Lady Gisela of Westphalia. She is twenty-eight, making her noticeably older than you, and is also a widow. Her previous marriage was childless, and while she holds a central position among the noble houses, her age and widowed status lead many councilors to view her as a less than ideal choice for a young king seeking to establish a dynamic new dynasty."
Finally, Dietrich points to the last name on the parchment with a grim expression. "Lastly, we have Lady Genevieve of Brabant. She is a recent divorcee who achieved the near-impossible task of securing a papal annulment. She managed this by publicly accusing her former husband of heresy and dark arts, ruining his house completely to win her freedom. She is extraordinarily brilliant, sharp-witted, and holds significant lands near the western trade routes, but her ruthless reputation and willingness to burn her own husband at the stake make many men in the realm terrified of her."
Lord Dietrich rolls the second scroll closed and looks at you with grave seriousness. "There you have them, Sire. The scandalous, the unusual, and the politically perilous. Each possesses power, but each comes with a price that could disrupt your reign before it has prop erly begun."
