Chapter 6 by pad03 pad03

Looking back up at the zombie with her wet eyes...

Annette captures the opportunity...

Wiping away the yellow muck from her lips, Annette frantically reaches for a nearby stool to her side. Her fingers struggle to grasp one of the wooden legs for a few seconds before she's able to get a good grip, then she forcefully throws her arm back towards just as the zombie as it begins to lurch forward in an attempt to continue violating the woman.

Wood splinters violently as the seat of the stool cracks the jaw of the zombie above her, knocking it onto its side and sending the jawbone across the floor, trailing the rotten flesh it was connected to. Fragments of wood shower back onto Annette too, causing a few small scratches across her exposed body. All things considered, it was a trade she would take any day of the week.

Staggering back to her feet and noticing the zombie still reeling from the impact, she lets go of the wooden leg. Annette takes the opportunity to remove some of the remaining foul taste from her mouth into a clean portion of the rags of her blouse. Wiping the maggots off her skin and then taking a steadying breath, she exclaims at it...

" ... I don't know what hellish spirits are controlling you, but I will not let you **** the bodies of those at rest! ... Erena, Goddess of Vitality, I beseech you, aid me in purifying this corrupted vessel!"

Azure specks of magic begin to rise in a column above the undead as they slowly grow in size. Annette amplifies the effects as she begins chanting a purification ritual her late-father taught her during her studies.

After a little while, the jawless zombie begins to lift itself off the ground with a guttural groaning noise, but as it does so, a strong blue angelic light pours through the roof of the priestess' home, engulfing the zombie entirely as the rotting flesh is stripped entirely off the corpse, leaving only skeletal remains behind.

The body had been successfully purified of whatever evil was controlling it and the zombie was no more.

Annette staggers back down onto the closest chair and takes some more ragged breaths before thanking her deity for empowering her. Purification rituals are undoubtedly powerful ritual magic, however they exhaust the spellcasters involved. Ritual spells such as this are normally performed by many people at once, but Annette's affinity for such arcane arts allowed her to shoulder the burden herself without draining her of mana entirely. A few minutes pass as Annette replaces her torn blouse and rinses her mouth out with some water, trying not think of what she ingested earlier lest she starts retching.

The priestess uses a shovel left outside of the chapel and finds a spot to bury the bones of her attacker, if just temporarily until they could identify who's remains they were, as all the nearby graves were seemingly untouched. She couldn't stand the thought of leaving the skeletal remains in her house and she wasn't willing to leave them out of consecrated ground.

With a weary sigh she returns the shovel and journeys up the hill to inform the villagers what had happened, and to find out why she was left to fend for herself against the threat.

She wasn't ready for what she saw down in the village...
