You wake on the ruined bed a man, and you stay one long enough to cut the first glove.

Hemm lets you take a strip of never-worn hide from the end of a bolt he would have thrown in the scrap, and you stitch it on the back cot after pins, wear it through a night on your own hand, and in the morning the leather knows this body: 186 centimeters, the beard, the brown hair, the sex that belongs to Charlie. After that you do not need the whole sister-cut shift to come home. You pull the glove on and the rest follows. You make two more male gloves when you can spare the hide, and you keep them in a press with the novice linen, because one lock is not enough if a fitting runs late.

The months on his bench are hard work. Cut, pin, pack. The window in his glass still turns. You are the one carrying boxes past it. He uses the caveat when a house pays, and you let him, and you learn how a seam sits on a copied hip better than it sits on a dummy. Coin goes into a tin. The tin gets heavy. The sexual jobs fill it faster than the honest hems, which is not a surprise after the week of the twenty sets.

Eventually you save up enough and you open your own door on a side street that does not need a girl in the window. A dressed dummy is enough. The sign is The Queen’s Lace, because the street already knows the story and will walk farther for that name than for a modest one. You do not put the real palace kit on the dummy. That lace comes out of a high drawer only when someone pays enough to make the memory worth touching.

A fitting runs like this.

A man comes with something his wife has worn — a stocking, a shift still warm from a morning. You take it into the back, put it on, and the body that arrives is hers, whole. You sew the real garment on that shape. If she came in herself, she stands in a never-worn muslin for the time it takes the cloth to take her, and that muslin goes in your drawer as brothers and sisters to your gloves. If he only sent laundry, you cut a save-glove while you are still her so you can call that house back without stealing another stocking. Then, if he paid only for the dress, you put the male glove on before you open the front latch. If he paid the back-room rate — and the ones who find you are mostly those men — they use the copy in the workroom while the dress is still half-pinned. You have started to let those hours run long. Not because he asks. Because taking the male glove off again feels like interrupting something you have grown to like.

Hemm's deal no longer carries. He comes by with a name and a purse when the noble is worth looking at and the extra gain is real, and sometimes you say yes. Sometimes you make him wait. You are no longer his sample. You are a tailor with your own shop that could teach him a thing or two.

Money begins to shows up as rent paid early, as a second clothes press, as a hired pair of hands who are told the glove drawer is not theirs. Festival weeks smell like perfume and coin. The modest repairs still come. The appointments that keep the lamp burning late are the other kind.

One afternoon near the end of the year a man with a good coat and a folded stocking puts more on the counter than the dress is worth and looks at the back curtain instead of the dummy. You take the stocking. You become his wife in the workroom, heavy in the chest the way she is, her mouth in on his cock while you pin. He pays the extra coin without being asked. He fucks you over the cutting table with her hair in his fist and his wedding ring clicking the wood, and he comes in you before you get a chance to return the favor. After, you lie a minute longer than the job in her body, then you pull the male glove on and watch the breasts go and the beard come back while his spend is still cooling on a man’s thighs. You hate that part less nowadays than you did on Hemm’s wool.

Most nights you remember the sleep rule. The male glove, the lamp out, Wellmark and its women and men yelling into the night outside your shop but still far enough away that its just a mumur. Some nights you forget and wake as someone else with a mouth that is not yours, and you sit on the edge of the cot until the leather is on your hand and Charlie is the face in the dark window.

The queen lace stays in the high drawer. Hallin the kings eyes does not make a request, perhaps he has forgotten in favor of other little playthings. The king does not call. You have a trade, a tin that fills, a new set of preferences you did not ask this world for, and a glove that still knows the remnants of your past life.

The latch is yours.
