You can feel the college boy inside you cringe, but with an effort of will or through the power of love or something corny like those, you somehow change him into another Caroline Susan Ma and merge with her. He’s apparently gone now, just some bad memories — and you’re entirely Ryan’s girlfriend Carrie Sue.

Eventually you two separate and you say, “Couldn't wait for our date, could you?”

“I’ve been so nervous,” says Ryan. He takes a chunky little velvet box from a pants pocket, kneels right next to you, pops the box open to reveal a solitaire engagement ring with a blue stone, and says, “Carrie Sue, will you marry me?”

Of course you say yes. You don’t know how you Carrie-fied the residue of your former self and merged with her, but there’s no envy for Ryan getting to marry you, just contentment with being the woman you are and delight that soon you’ll be Ryan’s wife.
