An unexpected discovery

Chapter 3

The sun must have set, as it is dark when Sam awakes. From downstairs, he hears laughter—warm and genuine—followed by the clatter of kitchen activity. The house may be Gothic, but its residents sound... normal. Alive. Perhaps even welcoming, in their own ways.

The room is almost entirely dark. As Sam’s eyes adjust, he quickly spots an unusual light source: On one side of his room, light shines through small holes in the floorboard. “This shitty place even has rotten floors,” he thinks to himself, “I hope I don’t fall through.”.

“I wonder if my downstairs neighbour can see through my floor and see me. That would mean I’d have no privacy in my own room.” Sam feels his heart pounding and for a brief moment, anxiety freezes him until it occurs to him that the holes are so small that his downstairs neighbour can’t possibly see through them unless she puts her eye up close to the hole. “With this house’s high ceilings, that is rather unlikely”, he thinks to himself. “I wonder how much she’d be able to see if she were able to put her eye up to the hole though. Maybe I should try it myself.”.

Sam climbs out of his bed and kneels on the floor. The floorboards creak with every move he makes. A pang of doubt enters his mind. “Should I really be doing this? I wouldn’t want my housemates spying on me, would I?”

To peek, or not to peek
