What are Laylah and David doing today?
An unexpected Double Date
David goes on a date with Shyann, a girl he used to be sweet on in high school. He's excited but wishes Shyann's choice for their first date wasn't The Pizza Shack, he was kinda hoping for a place with more atmosphere.
When they arrive they exchange pleasantries out front before heading inside. There's a bit of a wait at the hostess desk and the young couple find themselves behind two other couples. The ones talking to the hostess currently were an older couple, both in Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts. The couple directly in front of them looked about David and Shyann's age. The guy was a heavier-set blonde with long hair and he was dressed in a plaid button up and jeans, while the girl wore a periwinkle knitted dress that came down to below her knees. She was on the taller side but not ridiculously so and she had long... wavy..... auburn hair....
David looked down at her shoes. A pair of ugly lime-green converses that didn't go with any outfit. He knew those shoes anywhere!
"Laylah?" He inquired softly.
The girl whirled her head around and sure enough, there were hose big, red-rimmed glasses. Laylah blinked at David for a second before beaming with a surprised smile, "DAVID! Oh my god, haha small world!" she said before punching him lightly on the shoulder.
David, nervous that Laylah's excitement to see him might come off the wrong way to his date, nervously looked at Shyann. She smirked at him teasingly and said, "Two-timing me already, David?"
"N-no! Laylah and I have been buddies for a while, that's all!" David said, trying to play it cool and failing.
"No way David, are you... ON A DATE?!" Laylah said enthusiastically, David wished she wasn't treating this like some impossible miracle.
"Nice to meet you, Laylah, I'm Shyann." she said, shaking Laylah's hand affably. Then she looked at the heavier-set fellow next to Laylah who had turned around to see what all the hubbub was about. "And who might you be?" Shyann asked.
The guy opened his mouth to speak but Laylah interrupted him, "This is Ross! Guess what? WE'RE on a date too!"
David knew Ross, he had a few classes with him throughout high school and would occasionally see him around town. Nice dude, friendly, but a little quiet. He wasn't ugly, he was actually pretty handsome for a bigger guy, but David was still amused over how the hell he managed to pull someone like Laylah.
Ross opened his mouth again to say hello but was interrupted again by his date, "Hey, it looks like there's a wait for tables for two but I see some empty tables for four back near the back, we should do a double date!!!"
David was about to let her down easy, wanting a romantic evening with Shyann, but his date quickly interjected, "That sounds great, I hate waiting. Table for four." she said, holding up four fingers to the hostess, the Hawaiian shirt couple having moved on since their conversation began.
Laylah, Ross, and Shyann all seemed in good spirits, but David silently sulked watching Laylah's hair sway back and forth as she walked, revealing not only that her knitted dress was held up by only a single precarious knot perched on the back of her neck, but that the dress exposed just enough of her back to make it obvious to David that Laylah, in classic, oblivious fashion, had forgotten to put on a bra today.
As the four arrived at their table David looked at beautiful, funny, gorgeous Shyann and when she smiled at him, he returned it with one of his own.
In his head he prayed to any god that would listen that Laylah would not ruin this night for him.
