An old “friend”

Emily notices a large black man walking over to their table and plays it off as someone going to a table past theirs until he stops dead at their table with a big smile on his face looking directly at Tom.

“Hey Tom! It’s me Rayon from school”

“Hi Rayon, long time no see! How have you been doing?”

“Not bad man, not bad at all!…looks like you’ve been doing ok with this fine lady in your company!” Rayon gives Emily a cheeky wink.

I smile awkwardly as not knowing what to say to Rayon.

Tom notices and introduces me to him, “Rayon this is Emily my girlfriend” I put out my hand to shake his and give an awkward smile.

“Pleasure to meet you Emily, you’re a lucky man Tom”

“Thank you ha ha…”

Rayon cuts off Tom mid laugh “Hey man I need to run now but let me give you my number and we can grab a beer sometime?”

“Sure man” Tom says enthusiastically before his face slumps and realises his phone is dead. “ sorry Rayon my phones died…how about you give emily your number and I’ll get when my phones charged?”

“Sounds great…let me just call the number as well to make sure”

I awkwardly give Rayon my phone and he dials my number in. After a few taps he’s calling my phone and has my number. I was speechless! I can’t believe Tom my number away like that!…Rayon then says goodbye and walks off leaving me and Tom to dinner.

I don’t bring it up but Tom can see I’m annoyed but instead we finish our meal and leave.
