An awkward family dinner

John heard the sound of his mother's car pulling into the driveway. He quickly wiped his hands on a dish towel and took a deep breath, trying to compose himself, he liked Sam but he needed to act like his mother. The front door swung open, and his mother walked in, a bright smile on her face. "Hey, mum this is Hannah, she's a friend from my course" she said, her voice lilting with excitement.

John's eyes widened in surprise as he saw his classmate, Hannah, walking in behind his mother. "Hannah?" he said, his voice catching in his throat. He quickly refocused himself, remembering that he was supposed to be acting like his mother. Taking a deep breath, he plastered a smile on his face and stepped forward to greet Hannah. "Hannah, it's so great to meet you!" he said, trying to emulate his mothers cheery tone. He knew he had to be convincing, he wasn't about to make Hannah think his mother was some bizarre woman, he really liked her and didn't want to fuck this up for himself.

Hannah smiled back, looking slightly confused at the strange reaction John's mother had given, it was almost like she recognised her with the way she looked at her but she had never met this woman before in her life. "Really nice to meet you Mrs Doe" Hannah replied, the awkwardness of the interaction heavy in the air.

Thankfully the awkward moment quickly dissipates, John's father arrives and they soon settle in for a family meal. John's mother full of confidence and able to navigate the conversation with him and Hannah, John was honestly really impressed with his mothers work, he'd never even worked up the confidence to talk to her and in less than a day his mother was talking to her like she had known her for years.

After dinner Sally told John that him and Hannah were going to go over notes in John's room. John's heart was in his throat Hannah was going to just hang out in the house, he wished he could be there but recognising that it would be very weird for him as his mother to join them seeing as how she wasn't in his college class and supposedly had never met this girl. John watched Hannah and his former body ascend the stairs, wondering what he would do.
