An Awkward Moment

You stayed up so late with Melody, that when you woke up around 3:00 in the afternoon, you nearly bolted out of bed. A dinner date with Meghan; you certainly don't want to sleep through that! You quickly gather up some clothes, scurry to the bathroom and take a quick shower, or at least as quick as you can make it and still clean up properly. You dry off even quicker and toss your clothes on in a hurry. As you exit the bathroom, you see Melody is now awake and sitting up in bed.

"Hey there. Where's the fire?" She asks, rubbing her eyes.

"Huh?" You ask, your mind still fuzzy from not fully waking up.

"What are you in such a hurry for?" She asks. "Are we doing something special today?"

"Errr..." You stammer, suddenly wondering how to tell your friend you were leaving a second day in a row after her break-up. Melody sniffs the air suddenly and looks at you suspiciously.

"You smell good." She says. "Like you broke out the cologne." She lifts one eyebrow. "What have you gotten yourself into?"

"Err...well...I kinda have a...dinner date..." you stutter, rubbing the back of your head.

"The girl from yesterday." She states rather than asks. You nod simply. Melody sighs and lays down. "Okay. I'll just stay here by myself then. Alone."

You feel a pang of sadness. She needs you here with her, not out being selfish. Your libido needs to take a backseat. You may really Like Meghan, but Melody has been your friend for far too long for you to abandon her.

She must have caught the look on your face, because she sits up straight and gets serious. "Oh, no you don't." She says. "I know what you're thinking and don't you dare cancel with her."

"W-what?" You ask. "But...you just...I mean you're all..." She smiles at your embarrassed stammer of confusion.

"I'm just kidding, Jack." She laughs. "I haven't seen you this excited since you first started dating Gia. Frankly, I'm relieved you finally found someone new. You were seriously starting to worry me."

"What, really?" You ask.

"Of course. I want you to be happy. You're my best friend and I love you." She cocks her head to the side and smiled warmly. You feel a familiar shock run through you at those three words. New girl and new feelings or not, Melody will always be able to tug at your heartstrings and send tremors through your body. "You go, have a nice dinner, and get laid, okay?"

"You're the boss." You grin. "I'll treat you to dinner tomorrow."

"Gosh, are you trying to get me in bed too?" Melody taunts you, hitting close to home again. "You may want to have more tact with a girl on the rebound."

"You sure you're okay?" You ask again, worried now that she is mentioning her break-up. "I mean, what with everything between you and Keith..."

"Oh, fuck Keith." Melody says with a grimace. "He can eat a dick. I am sick of feeling sorry for myself because of him. You were right all along; he didn't deserve me. And I'm not going to let him hurt me anymore."

"There's the strong girl I know." You smile and rub her cheek. She shyly blushes a bit and you feel your heart swell. You forceably try to bury the feelings. You have a good feeling about Meghan and you're not going to let your unrequited crush on your best friend get in the way of it.

"You know...you should probably shave." Melody said. You blink a few times, returning to reality. "You're looking a little scruffy, Grizzly Adams."

"Oh, jeez. Good call." You say and head off into the bathroom. you could hear Melody giggle behind you as you leave. You give yourself a quick shave to get rid of the excess stubble. As you finish up and wash off the remaining shaving cream, you hear a knock at the door.

"I'll get it." Melody says. "I'm up and dressed." You towel off and are about to leave the bathroom when you hear Melody gasp out loud.
