Chapter 90

TheUnfathomable
What oh what shall they find?
An... unstable source of information.
I wasn't quite sure what I should do myself at first. I had a very unfair advantage, seeing as I already knew to a much larger degree what had occurred. Part of me was concerned that I could subconsciously use this information in a discovery, revealing I knew more than I should.
As I continued to think about it, I wandered around in the act of looking for clues. I didn't want to look suspicious, after all. Looking in places I was pretty sure would not yield results, I stalled the need for me to figure out what I would do if I did find something.
After a few moments, my mind began to wander during the tedium of walking and looking. I thought about my most recently gained alias, "the Twisted One". I had come up with it myself, but it caused me to think back to my previous life.
There had been so many names I went by back then. I suppressed a chuckle as I thought back to a few highlights. 'The Devil, The Wendigo, The Boogyman, The Oni, The Shadow... So many titles I had collected. Come to think of it, there were very few boogiemen that I had not been named as. The only one I can think of is Baba Yaga... Which was held by the man who killed me. Huh, rather poetic, now that I think about it.'
Tilting my head in thought, I almost didn't notice when I walked past a large hole that had been busted into the wall. Just after I walked past it, I paused and took a few steps backwards, examining it carefully.
Once I had looked it over enough to be certain, I called out to the others. "Just a report; I believe I have located the monster's point of entry." I walked up closer to it, running my fingers of the jagged edge of the shattered wood.
I heard footsteps approaching not long after. Soon enough, I heard Millana calling out to me. "Where is it? What makes you so..." She trailed off as she made it within sight of the blasted wall. "...certain..."
We stood there in silence for a few seconds before Isabell and the guards caught up. At first, Isabell looked upset and was about to give Millana a lecture of sorts before she too noticed the breach in the wall.
There was a silence that encompassed the whole crowd as we slowly took in more and more of the scene before us. Many soldiers, with an assortment of crushed or ripped of limbs, even some with elite looking gear. It seems my champion cared very little about their status, all being murdered equally brutally.
It wasn't long until the final group of Lana and Karen finally showed up to the scene as well, having found no major clues and wondering what the commotion was. There was nothing new in the way of observations from this, but it was fair to say no one really cared.
Having gotten my fill earlier than the rest, I resumed my leisurely patrol away from the site of entry. While walking away, I had to carefully step to avoid the much more populous corpses in this area. There was no doubt that this is where the fighting had begun.
Only a few steps away from earshot from the others, I began to hear a very faint muttering. After a minute or so of searching, I found a large pile of sorts that had been unsteadily built from debris, crates, and an odd corpse or so. Whatever was muttering, was definitely inside it.
Not knowing what to expect, I once again called to the others. "Sorry to disturb once again, but I believe I may have found someone." That got a reaction from the background characters, the two sisters both quickly scrambling to see who I had found.
While they rushed over, I carefully moved a few pieces out of the way to begin to uncover whoever was inside. I had no concept for who or what it could be, though I of course was seemingly instinctively aware it was not my champion.
After getting a rather large piece out of the way, I was able to peer inside to figure out who it was. It seemed to be a young boy, perhaps having recently reached 18. Something was vaguely familiar about him, though I couldn't quite place it.
With the gap created, I became able to barely hear his mutterings, "Dead, all dead. All of them. It killed all of them. And I just sat here... I just hid. And I let them all die. They're all dead..." From there, he seemed content to keep looping in his mad ramblings.
Just as I was ready to give up trying to figure out this character, I overheard Millana whisper something under her breath. "Oh thank the Goddesses, he's alive." Putting slightly more thought into it, that allowed me to put together why he looked familiar.
I turned back to Millana, "Wait, isn't that the kid who was with you in the wagon? The one you had drive us back since your driver was dead?" She gave a nod, and I turned back to him. Part of me wondered what he could be doing here, but it didn't quite matter at the second.
Millana stepped forward, and I removed a bit more of the young man's defensive structure so that she could have better access to him. "Lycus? Lycus, are you alright? What happened here?" She used a caring tone, like how one would speak to a crying child.
Lycus stopped his ramblings for a moment, completely paused. He then turned to look at us, taking a second before he recognized Millana. As soon as he did, he quickly stood up in a ready stance, like how a soldier would stand when addressed.
I expected him to say some kind of excuse for his cowardice, however I was most certainly surprised. "L-lady Millana! I-I am, as of now, resigning from my post." His voice was cracking up, as if he was on the very edge of tears, despite his face showing he had already finished crying. "I will leave the entirety of house Normn, and seek civilian life." He gave a bow, before collapsing unceremoniously onto the ground and assuming the fetal position.
We all stood there in silence, none of us knowing what to say to him, each other, or really just at all. One thing was for certain, my new servant had very much done his job well.
Well... what could possibly follow that?
