Chapter 18

Ambushed

It was an orc ambush! I froze as half a dozen of orcs jumped out of the thick bushes. Korant shouted bravely, but an orc mace knocked him out before he could even pull out his sword.

In an instant, I was surrounded by orcs and the dwarves were nowhere to be seen. They had bolted... and I was all alone!

Terrified, I dropped my sword and raised my hands. I had no chance and I knew it!

Minutes later, the orcs had tied me up. They took my weapons and gear off of me, then dragged me and Korant to an orcish camp nearby. There were only a dozen tents or so with a crude barricade blocking the only entrance to the camp.

From my position on one of the orcs’s shoulders, I had a good vantage point. I looked around to see a few dozen orcs, rough, buff, in light armor and armed with maces, axes and throwing spears. However, they also looked at me and their looks were... concerning, to say the least.

The orcs took me to the biggest tent and threw me on the ground.

“You there, human!”, a coarse voice said.

I looked up to see an orc woman. One of her tusks was chipped, the other pierced by a few metal links.

“What are you doing here?”
“You... you speak the Common tongue?”,
I replied, surprised.
“I do, yes. And I will make full use of it, little human.”

She knelt next to me and grabbed my hair, pulling my head up. Looking up, I saw her ferocious expression.

“Such a small, effeminate human like you cannot be a warrior.”

Effeminate? I was not effeminate... was I?

“You will tell us all you know... or else!”
