Humans are known throughout the galaxy for their talent of being able to scrap together solutions to most any problem in almost any circumstance. They have a nearly spiritual connection to machines due to their almost entirely unique level of pack-bonding.

Humans, like most pack predators, place an extremely high emotional significance on their pack mates. This alone would be novel in and of itself, but when combined with the fact that humans can, will, and do pack bond with almost anything (including non-sentient creatures and inanimate objects) means that a human engineer is considered both the least sane and the most capable engineer one can have on a starship.
