Administrative details and a request
After your delightful moment of going slightly mad with power it was time to settle down for the actual brass tax of the situation. The walls of your fortress would take time to build even with the full backing of the church. That left your first step to recruit your knights. They would then pick the squires who would accompany them.
"You're heading into a hard land." The Arch-priestess said as she began assembling scrolls. The responses from knights who had expressed willingness to join your order. "We do not even yet fully know all the dangers it holds. Choose well those who will be at your back."
"What of the threats we do know?" You asked, you had to admit your general knowledge of the frontier was lacking, you'd not had the time or inclination to read of it too much before departure and what little literature the fortress had held was mostly hearsay.
"There is at least one tribe of orcs that are known, the town of Oaktree has admitted to paying them tribute for protection. They are no civilized tribe but as of yet, they have kept their word. Of other threats, we have heard many, tales of things that lurk in the night snatching daughters and sons when backs are turned. The dryads give them back. Few others do." The Arch-Priestess said. A fancy way of saying the only creatures identified were the ones that there had been escaping from.
"I understand." You said with a nod.
"As Grandmaster, you will have many choices. The first is what knights will you bring to the Frontier."
You truly realized how small your order was considering that you could have filled every spot with the applicants from the Order of Darkness alone. The only order not represented in the choices before you was your own. Even The Nameless Order had one.
"Some of these knights are... young." Every knight was a full warrior in their own right. However, you knew from experience that full knighthood and squiring was a world of difference. Not that you were ancient or anything but you had years and victories under your belt. A number of those in front of you were barely past their vows.
"Yes," The Archpriestess agreed. "But that's not a bad thing. They're not yet set in the ways of their order."
"I'm going to be bringing squires, I'll need teachers for them."
"Then bring teachers." The Arch-priestess said. "Just keep in mind what will be taught."
You understood what she meant. Older more experienced knights would be more set in their old order's tactics and strategies. Younger knights while not squires would be more mouldable.
You were hesitant but what you were going to be facing wasn't the midlands, the eastern planes, or the south. It was new and you needed people who hadn't been learning a particular way to fight for several years and being biased by it's success.
There was one exception.
"Sister-Knight Catherine. An excellent choice." The Arch-priestess nodded approvingly.
For the rest even if you weren't taking experienced knights the new ones would at least have the basic skills of their order or they wouldn't have been graduated.
"Naturally you will need to choose a second, but that choice can wait until your knights have assembled and you have had the chance to meet them. We shall deploy the sacred pigeons immediately." The Arch-Priestess said, you'd noticed the series of tiny scrolls tied by a string to the pages you'd picked and their purpose was now clear. "Before you go, there is one last matter. Squires. The future of your order. I have a... request."
The oddest thing was she seemed to really mean it. It was a request, not a demand. You could fully say no to whatever it was without repercussion.
"It is unusual, but... would you be willing to accept a half-orc into your order?"
