Chapter 896 by Fiftyfiftyfifty Fiftyfiftyfifty

What do you do?

Act nonchalant.

While the city itself is free to pass into, there are still guards monitoring the roads just in case. There's a trade cart ahead of you, escorted by some guards, and driven by a flamboyantly dressed merchant. It's a positive thing, to not be the only ones passing through. The three of you (technically four) make your way slowly down the road, as if you were all making your way back from a morning of study. The cart passes through, and next it's your turn. It isn't a situation where you need to register your entry, so things will only go poorly if they specifically pull you aside for some reason.

Lynx glances up to you. "They're staring at us," she says. "We need to look more convincing. Trust me. I'm your spymaster, aren't I?"

"So what do we do?" you ask.

"Follow my lead."

Once you get closer, Lynx suddenly wraps her arms around your arm and tugs you in close with a big smile across her face. "Oh sweetie, this was such a nice time out~!" she shouts. "The sun was shining, and it wasn't even all that cold. Even when there was a breeze, you held me so warm and close."

That caught me off guard, but I get it. We're a couple. Not only do we have more character, but people don't really like involving themselves in other people's public displays of affection. It makes them uncomfortable.

"I--" you try to respond.

Vivi cuts you off by grabbing your other arm. "I know we only went out to study flora, but this was a wonderful date. Can we go get dinner later too~?"

Lynx's single crimson eye shines like fire as she glares straight past you and towards the witch.

She smiles back.

Wait! Which is supposed to be my girlfriend?

Lynx tugs harder. "I'm so happy you're my boyfriend. Remember when you said I shone brighter than the sun, and I was prettier than the flowers we were studying? Oh, it was so romantic. You know exactly what to say, my love."

"I still remember when you confessed to me," Vivi says. "It was a day just like this one. We stood side-by-side by the ocean, breeze through our hair, when you said you'd love me forever. I'll never forget."

You nearly stumble over as the two girls tug on either side of you, all while Mina simply strolls awkwardly behind. While the guards were casually glancing in your direction before, now their eyes are glued on the interaction. Somehow, they managed to make things so much worse.

"Hey," you whisper. "We gotta decide who the girlfriend is if we're doing this. Stop fighting. You'll get us busted."

"Pardon me," one of the guards speaks up. It's an elven woman glad in chainmail. She steps forward and holds out a hand to get your attention. "May I speak with you, sir?"

Crap! "Yes. What is it?" you reply.

She looks you over for a long, stressful moment. "Are both of these lovely young ladies your girlfriend?"

You swallow. "Ye... Yes?"

Another lengthy pause. "Well then. Good for you! It is quite wonderful to see mutual polyamorous relationships succeed in such a healthy manner. Continue on."

My heart can't take this. "Thank you, ma'am."

"Oh. One more thing."

What now?

Her brow furls. By her stare, your heart skips a beat. She steps in close, and it almost looks for a moment like she's going to strike. "These are some of the cutest girls I have seen in some time. You better do right by them, or I swear by the gods, I will throw you in the stocks myself."

"Aha. Of course. Their happiness is my top priority," you respond.

"Good. Have a nice day, you three."

I can't believe this world has made me more afraid of social encounters than giant monsters.

What do you do?
