Chapter 26 by Fantasy Fantasy

Accept?

Accept.

“I accept. I think this is fair.” You nod confidently.

“Are you sure? You’d have to tutor two people in four different subjects.” Ms. Miller warns.

You turn to the two, very annoyed girls next to you. They dislike you, but not as much as many others do. You see this tutoring offer as an opportunity to improve their scores. Basically, to make friends. As such, you’ll start not with what you hope to gain, but with what you can offer them.

“If you’re willing to accept, I’d like to help. I think I can, at least. I actually have some experience tutoring already.” You then turn to the teacher. “I did it in high school for a few friends and for my little sister. However, I still think they should get a choice, Ms. Miller. If they don’t want to help me in return, I won’t get results, and I can’t have that. I’m serious about improving my condition.”

Ms. Miller crosses her arms, contemplating. “I guess you’re right. You’ll gain nothing if they’re not willing to do a proper job.” She agrees. “So, girls. What will it be? I could look for another person, but he has the approval of the other teachers and I doubt I’ll find a single person that can help you with all subjects. That’d make scheduling way more difficult.”

Emily and Megan look at each other, and as if having a silent conversation, nod at the same time.

“Fine, we accept.” Emily says and Megan nods.

Hey! Success!

“Excellent!” Ms. Miller claps her hands together and smiles brightly. “Let’s get the schedule settled right now!”

After talking with Ms. Miller and Emily, with Megan remaining silent the whole time, you agree on a schedule that works for everyone. Both girls need help with English and Math, while Emily also needs help with Chemistry and Megan with History. You’re not in any clubs, so you’re free after 4:00 PM, but the girls have soccer practice on Tuesdays and Thursday. As such they’ll supervise your workout on Mondays and Wednesdays after school, and you’ll help them study when their soccer practice is over. When you asks if they’ll have the energy to study after practice, Emily gets angry, and even Megan has an insulted expression on her face.

“Don’t think a little practice is enough to tire us out! Don’t you dare look down on us!”

With that perfectly clear and Ms. Miller’s instruction to jog 20 minutes every day, you exit the teacher’s office.

You want to say something to the girls, but you feel like they’re still not happy with the deal and you don’t want to make things worse. Still, you’ll be working with them for some time! You should say something, right?

“Your name was David, right?” Emily asks quickly and firmly, with a tone that suggests the only answers can be yes or no.

“Yes.” You flinch at her words, but you answer.

“Let me make things clear. Neither of us is happy with this arrangement,” She points to Megan and herself. “But we have ****. If we get bad grades, we’ll be kicked out of the soccer team. Here at Hayes, grades are more important than sports, so nerds like you feel right at home.” She almost spits those words in annoyance and frustration. “We’ll do our part, so you do yours. We’re not going to be friends, but we’ll get you in shape if you can get us to get passing grades. Are we clear?”

“Y-Yes Ma’am!” Your body stiffens. Man, this girl is scary in a very different way than all the others. Megan has a sad look on her face as she stares at the ground. You briefly wonder what she’s like.

Both girls leave, and you leave to have lunch alone in what time you have left. Mostly out of curiosity, you check to see if this little exchange affected any of their scores.

-Miller, Julia- Affection Score: 21.

-Miller, Emily- Affection Score: -10.

-Grant, Megan- Affection Score: -1.

Hey, what do you know? It did!
