Chapter 44

They chat

About the library

Lukas leaned back on his elbows, stretching out his legs as he glanced over at Julia, the corners of his mouth curling into a small smile. “So,” he began, keeping his tone light, “you’ve been avoiding the crowd out here all by yourself?”

Julia smirked, adjusting his jacket around her shoulders. “Not really avoiding,” she replied with a playful lilt, “just... taking a breather. Sometimes a girl needs a little peace before jumping back into the chaos.”

He chuckled, taking another sip of his beer. “Yeah, I can see that. It’s a bit wild in there.” He hesitated for a moment, then added, “But hey, you usually love being the life of the party.”

She turned to look at him, her eyes sparkling under the dim porch light. “True,” she admitted, her smile growing wider. “But sometimes, the best moments happen away from the crowd.” Her gaze lingered on him for a beat longer, a hint of something mischievous in her eyes.

“Oh?” Lukas raised an eyebrow, playing along. “Got any specific moments in mind?”

Julia leaned closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Remember the library?” she asked, her tone suggestive. “That was a pretty good moment.”

Lukas nearly choked on his beer, a rush of heat rising to his cheeks. “You mean...?”

“Oh, you know exactly what I mean,” she cut in, her smile turning into a full-on grin. “Was I screaming?”

He couldn't help but laugh, the memory flooding back.

“Hey, it was risky fun,” he admitted, grinning back at her. “And you could say you needed help with those ‘anatomy’ notes.”

Julia rolled her eyes but laughed, a warm, throaty sound that made him smile wider. “Anatomy notes? That’s the best you’ve got?” She nudged him playfully with her shoulder.

“Guilty as charged,” he said, raising his hands in surrender. “But you didn’t seem to mind.”

“Maybe I didn’t,” she replied coyly, her eyes flicking to his. There was a brief pause, the air between them charged with a mix of flirtation and nostalgia. The warmth from his jacket and the buzz from the drinks made the chilly air around them feel almost cozy.

Lukas looked at her, his smile softening. “Well, at least the library never knew what hit it,” he quipped.

Julia laughed again, leaning into him just a bit. “True,” she said, her voice dropping to a more sincere tone. “It was fun. And, you know... you were good at making things... memorable.”

He felt a flutter in his chest at her words, the playful atmosphere taking on a more intimate edge. “Likewise,” he replied, his voice quiet but genuine. “Some things are just hard to forget.”

She met his gaze, her smile warm and slightly wistful. “Yeah,” she murmured, “they really are.”

She invites him upstairs
