Chapter 19 by TheBlinded TheBlinded

What's next?

Abandon spying. Testing out a new weapon comes first

It might have been because Ruby wasn’t in her life anymore. Reese’s life didn’t know anything about Jaune or Weiss and wouldn’t be attached to them. Another factor was probably that Ruby didn’t get a chance to try out other people’s weapons as much as she liked. Either way, Ruby decided to forgo spying on her friends. Checking out a new weapon was her new priority. She still planned to learn what the end result of the date was though. It could just wait a little longer.

Ruby and Arslan made their way through Vale. Arslan was leading the way, but Ruby found her feet moving with her in step. Reese had been here before so Ruby just let her life lead. It didn’t take long for Ruby to figure out where they were heading. An old man owned a small weapon’s shop off the main street. She had been there plenty of times to pick up parts. While she liked to make her own weapons and never had to wait for repairs, rumors had it he did good work.

“Ah, you’re here,” the man welcomed them after they walked in. “I remember you. That skateboard of yours took quite a beating, but it’s as good as new.”

“Beating?” Arslan eyed Ruby. “You told me it was just a jam, Reese.”

“Hehehe…” Ruby didn’t need any help acting as she rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly. Arslan sighed as Ruby handed over the credits for the repairs and took it out back to test it out.

“Don’t overdo it,” Arslan ordered. “Just run through the basic motions and make sure there’s nothing unusual.”

“I know!” Ruby called over her shoulder, as she turned the hoverboard on and set it down. It floated about a foot off the ground and excitement overtook her. She hoped on the board and it barely wavered under her weight.

The controls were pretty simple. Well, in theory. Her feet’s positioning determined how the board moved. Normally, it would take a long time to master a sensitive piece of equipment like this, but Ruby had Reese’s life guiding her. Moving on instinct alone, Ruby took off. Shifting her position slightly, the board veered to the right, nearly throwing her off. It was only thanks to her body’s center of gravity adjusting automatically. She kicked her back leg and the board blasted upwards. Ruby grinned and reached down. The board broke into two halves as she started to fall. After checking the shifting into the guns, she slipped the pieces back together below her. The second her feat landed on the sensors, the hoverboard roared back to life and she swerved away before hitting the ground.

“This… is… awesome!” Ruby cried out. Having a weapon was one thing. A weapon that doubled as transport? That was another thing entirely.

“Everything working then?” Arslan called back, as Ruby zipped over to her.

“It’s like brand new.”

“Good. Then let’s head back to Beacon. We need to hammer out some team strategies.”

“Aww…”

Reese’s life and Ruby both didn’t want that. Of course, Ruby could go along with her and play around with the hoverboard. It’s not like one of those come along every day. This experience also gave her an idea on examining other people’s weapons. Most hunters and huntresses didn’t like other people using their specially designed equipment. With the remote, she could spend days just trying them out. Then there was the fact she was out in Vale and could find something else to do. She would just have to use the remote to get away from Arslan.
