Chapter 2 by Flapjack Flapjack

What's next?

A week on the road

As you continue your journey along the dusty road, a week's worth of travel has left its mark on your weary body. Despite the warnings of highwaymen and bandits, your encounters thus far have been limited to the relentless battle against the blisters on your feet.

Each day follows a similar routine: walking, foraging for food, more walking, and meticulously maintaining your sword and armor. The summer warmth has at least made camping outdoors a somewhat pleasant experience, but the longing for the comfort of a soft bed grows stronger with each passing day. You hope that the village of "Woodsedge," rumored to have a spare bed for travelers, will provide some respite this evening.

"Woodsedge" derives its name from its close proximity to the great darkwood forest, whose ominous presence looms on the horizon. Like a dense black cloud, it seems to devour the summer sunshine, casting an eerie shadow over the land. Perhaps within the depths of this forest, your true test as an adventurer awaits.

As dusk begins to settle, you finally arrive at "Woodsedge." It reveals itself as a quaint little village nestled amidst some humble crop fields and a sawmill. The villagers have learned to maintain a safe distance from the darkwood, recognizing the potential dangers lurking within its depths.

You observe the flickering lights of the village, their warm glow providing a beacon of hope amidst the encroaching darkness. A sense of anticipation fills your weary heart. The time has come to seek shelter and rest, but what challenges and secrets lie within the ancient forest of darkwood? Only time will reveal the answers as you venture forward into the unknown.

With aching muscles and a longing for rest, you approach a local lumberjack who appears to be engrossed in his work. Politely, you inquire about the whereabouts of the inn, seeking a much-needed respite. The lumberjack pauses, momentarily captivated by the sight of your gleaming armor.

"That's some fancy looking gear you've got there, lad," he remarks, a hint of admiration in his voice. "You one of those adventurer types?"

Grateful for the chance to engage in conversation after a week of solitary travel, you respond eagerly, "Indeed, I am. Is the village in need of someone with my skills?"

A glimmer of hope illuminates your eyes, as you imagine the possibility of embarking on a new quest or helping the villagers with their troubles.

The lumberjack's expression turns contemplative, and he shakes his head with a sigh. "I don't know about that, lad. Not much goes on here. We keep our distance from the Darkwood, and it keeps its distance from us, if you get my meaning."

Disappointment washes over you, but deep down, you knew that a quiet village like this might not hold grand adventures. You offer the lumberjack a polite nod of gratitude and make your way towards the inn he mentioned.

The "Timber Fell" inn reveals itself as a cozy establishment, its wooden structure exuding warmth and comfort. As you step inside, the scent of hearty meals and the sound of lively conversation fill the air, providing a stark contrast to the solitude of the road. Weary but grateful for the prospect of a good night's rest, you approach the innkeeper and secure a room for the evening, looking forward to a soft bed and a warm meal. Little do you know, the tranquility of Woodsedge may be deceiving, and the secrets of the Darkwood may yet beckon you to uncover the mysteries that lie within.
