Chapter 7 by Jpyric Jpyric

Without waiting for an answer, he leads her into the rest of the house.

A tour

It’s not much of a tour, to be honest. Despite the rewards of being a renowned champion, Kael has never led an extravagant life. There are amenities, to be sure, like the magical icebox, and running water, also magically cooled or heated as needed, but it’s not exactly a mansion. Two bedrooms, one unoccupied most of the time, a bathroom, a kitchen, a living room, a dining room. And a large storage room for various items, mostly weapons and armor.

Kael leads Evie around, explaining the more exotic things, such as the shower. Kael had insisted upon that, as the one luxury he cared about. Evie seems to understand his explanation, and Kael can tell that despite her station in life, she’s quite intelligent. He shows her his bedroom, explaining that she should not worry about coming in if she ever needs anything. Kael has no real worries about his privacy, it’s not like anything untoward happens in there.

As he’s explaining this to Evie, his mind wanders a bit. He considers his solitude, and how he ended up this way. When he first became lord’s champion, he had a wealth of potential relationships drop into his lap, sometimes literally. But though they led to some flings, and certainly some fun, nothing serious ever developed. Many were eager to attach themselves to him for power, money, or fame, and Kael has no desire for such a hollow companionship. The few that had genuine interest were soon scared off by either the bloody nature of his duty, or the burdens it placed upon him.

Shaking off the depressing past, he leads Evie across the hall to her room. He hears the petite elf gasp quietly at the sight of the bed. As this was intended as a guest room, it’s essentially the same as Kael’s, down to the large and comfortable bed. A dresser with a large mirror beside it stand in one corner, but beyond that the only items in the room are several large bookcases.

Though his duty is as a warrior, Kael was always intent on keeping his mind as sharp as his blades. Though hardly a scholar, he was still an avid reader, absorbing books of all kinds. There is a wide variety of books on the shelves, from serious studies of history, to lurid romance novels, and everything in between. His eyes scan the neatly organized rows, and he casually selects one.

He turns to Evie, who is still looking around, wide eyed. “Feel free to read any of these. I’m sure you can find something you like. As for me, I’m going to read, and go to bed. If anything happens, feel free to come get me, understand?”

Evie bows to him. “Yes, master. Thank you, master.”

Kael winces, not used to this yet. “I have some training in the morning, but afterwards we can see about getting you some more clothes, and other necessities.”

She bows again. “Whatever you want, master.”

Kael sighs. “Get some rest, Evie. Hopefully you like it here. Good night.”

“Good night, master.”

Kael closes the door. How did he end up like this?
