Chapter 59

Vain
What about Brandon then...? And does anyone come to their rescue?
A time for confessions, with Ashley and Brandon
"Dammit...!" Brandon groaned to himself as he managed to clamber to his feet again. At first he'd been more than ready to keep pummeling the other guy with his fists, once they'd landed at the bottom of the steep slope, but then he'd quickly come to realize what their stupid dispute had led to...
"Damn, Kurt! Are you alright?!" He knew it was a stupid question even as the words left his mouth, as he could already see the state of the blonde's twisted arm for himself. He'd seen quite a lot of such injuries before, even if he'd never been much involved in giving anyone first aid himself. On the football field they always had other people seeing to that kind of things.
"Brandon...?!" Another voice caused the young man to turn his head, and he was quite surprised to see Gavin quickly making his way down the slope to join them. Just like himself, the guy was clearly shocked to see the state of Kurt's arm though, and the two of them just stared at each other for a couple of moments before coming to some kind of mutual decision.
"I'll go fetch the others!" Gavin told him, even as he was already on his way back up to path again. He too was still in swimming trunks, and neither Kurt or Brandon had even bothered to bring their phones with them to the falls, so one of them had to go telling the others. "Just try and make sure that he's not trashing around too much!"
"Uh, yeah...!" Brandon nodded in return, even as he wasn't too sure of what to do if Kurt decided to try and get up on his own. In a way he wanted to think that guy had deserved this, but he'd seen enough injuries in his life than to wish for somebody to break their bones. "Hey, Kurt? Just hang in there, okay?"
"Y-yeah, fine..." The blonde was clearly pale by now, but somehow managed what looked like a pained smile when Brandon asked him how he was doing. It was like the haze had finally lifted from their minds, and thanks to the shock they were both able to put their childish squabble aside for a while.
"Shit, man... I'm really sorry, you know..." Brandon told him, and actually felt like he really meant it this time around.
"I shouldn't have thrown the first punch!" Kurt groaned back at him, though it wasn't all too clear if he was talking about the actual punch, or for trying to steal someone's girlfriend. "I bet you think I deserved this..."
"Yeah, you did!" Brandon managed a quick grin back at him, and then felt like he owed the guy some kind of apology as well. "And I never even did anything to your cousin, you know..."
"Nah, I figured as much." The other guy's voice was getting a bit faint by now, and it took Brandon a moment to realize that he was actually passing out from the pain already. Before that happened, Kurt managed to surprise him once again however. "I'd never done that either, with a girlfriend like yours, you know..."
Meanwhile, Ashley herself was looking out across the foaming water, and then back again to the various attires that lay scattered across the beach. Her own and Victoria's clothes were still there of course, just like most of the others, but it was the ones missing that caused her some reasons to be worried.
"Looks like Kurt and Brandon went back to the cabin...?" Her friend echoed her own thoughts exactly, and didn't look too happy about the idea either. Just as she said, it seemed like only those two's things were gone, and it was deeply troubling to think that they'd left together, considering the state they'd been in the last time they'd seen them.
Strangely enough, she was just as bothered about something else however, and she couldn't stop from looking around for the others who were supposedly still in the close vicinity. Vicky said she'd seen Chloe and Gavin heading off for the far side of the small lake together, but couldn't account for Heather or Zachary at all.
"Why do you ask, by the way...?" Victoria seemed suddenly curious, and she looked even more determined to find out when Ashley couldn't come up with a good answer right away. Even more so when she could also feel her cheeks slowly start turning red again. "Ash, what's wrong...?"
"It's... nothing, really!" Ashley tried her best to just shrug it off, but already knew that she wasn't very good at keeping any secrets for her good old friend.
"Look..." She started eventually, but hesitated again before allowing herself to continue. The words just spilled out of her mouth then, and before she knew it she was actually confessing what she and Zachary had been doing together that very same morning. "It... just happened, you know...!"
"You and Zack?" Victoria was obviously quite shocked to hear about this, but also seemed quite amused, or even relieved for some reason. It took Ashley a few moments to realize why, but when she did she could barely keep from laughing herself. "And here I was all worried about you and Kurt, you know...!"
"Well, I know that your sisters have been like best friends for ages..." Vicky continued eventually, once they'd both stopped laughing again, and she still had that cute look of utter surprise on her face. "But... I never thought that you...?"
"Well, it came out of nowhere, really!" Ashley tried to defend herself, but still couldn't keep from laughing about it. "It's just... something about all this... damn fresh air, you know!"
"Yeah, I'd guess..." The other blonde girl smiled back at her, but then nodded her head slightly towards the falls, and her face became a little more serious all of a sudden. "I don't think you're the only one to feel that way either..."
"No way...?" Ashley could feel the color being drained from her face for a moment, as she turned to see Zack and Heather appearing together from somewhere beside the falls, and from the looks of it she too could tell that Vicky was perfectly correct in her own assumptions. The smile on Heather's lips in particular was one that Ashley herself could easily relate to, and there was more proof than that of what the two could have been doing while all on their own together.
At the other hand, she was hardly the one to judge them either...
"Oh, god..." She mumbled though, as she could feel the blood came rushing back to her face again, and she came to realize that this whole situation had gotten way out of her hands a long time ago. Still there was little she could do but stand there and wait, while Zack slowly came wading over to where she and Vicky were standing.
For some reason Heather choose not to follow him right away, though it didn't call for much of Ashley's imagination to figure why she could need cleaning up a bit first...
What's next then? What about Kurt, and what about the missing Chloe...?
