A tale

Zack looked suspiciously at the girls, he knew something was up, even if he didn’t know what. “What is it?” He asked the girls.

“You have to promise not to tell anyone.” Sarah said nervously.

“Forget that, if that video is what I think it is, what’s stopping Kurt from sending it to other people?” Heather said venomously.

“Is this a sex tape?” Zack asked incredulously, holding up his phone.

“The makings of one, yeah. We thought we could pull one over Kurt’s eyes and escape unscathed, but we can’t seem to beat him.” Sarah said.

“So your plan was to, what? Have sex with him? Sounds like a great plan, and how exactly would that embarrass him, or whatever your goal was?”

“The plan was to make him think we would have sex with him, maybe let him have a little, but leave him blue balled as soon as we thought it was getting to far.” Sarah said.

“So what went wrong?”

“The jerk was taping it; we didn’t realize how bad that was until just now.” Heather said. Zack shook his head, not really knowing what to say. What was he supposed to do about it exactly?

“Aren’t you worried about Heather’s reputation? I thought you two were a thing?” Sarah asked.

“A thing? I guess you didn’t tell her?” Zack asked Heather.

“There wasn’t really any need to.” Heather said.

“Wait a sec, you aren’t together? I thought you were.” Sarah said surprised.

“We were, until she took comfort in another man’s arms.”

“Oh.” Was all that Sarah said, as everything went awkwardly silent.

“I honestly, have no more reason to be mad or disappointed in what Heather does, so I hope she can live with her decisions.” Zack said bitterly before walking away, anywhere but there. Heather never looked up to see him walk away.

“Well that was rude of him, can you believe him?” Sarah scoffed. “How people change.” She said thinking of Zack when she knew him all those years ago.

“It was Kurt.” Heather said.

“What?” Sarah asked.

“I cheated on Zack with Kurt.” Heather said looking Sarah in the eye.

“Ah…ok.”

“Of course you already knew.” Heather said incredulously.

“You think Kurt wouldn’t brag about it?” Sarah tried to lighten the mood with a little joke.

“I messed things up so bad with Zack Sarah, now I don’t know what to do anymore.” Heather confided in her cousin.

“Kurt thought of you dually as a threat and an opportunity.” Sarah said.

“What are you talking about?” Heather asked curiously.

“I shouldn’t even be telling you this, so keep it to yourself, but Kurt had found out about your treasure hunting with Zack and wanted to put an end to it.”

“But why?” Heather asked.

“Because what the clues lead to is in Johnson territory, where dad has been excavating for the past few years.” Sarah said.

“You mean…”

“Yes, dad knows of the legends. He had the construction crews dig in the spot the clues led to, but all the uncovered was a large rock. Dad ordered no one to touch it or get near it until he could get someone to tell him what it was, the expert is due in these parts by the end of the month.” Sarah said.

“A rock? Kurt ruined my relationship over a rock?!” Heather exclaimed.

“There’s more naturally. By being with you, he thought he could convince your dad and ours to agree to a marriage between the two of you that would’ve merged the family resources into one company through him.”

“Bastard!” Heather exclaimed.

“Shush! I’d rather no one else heard this please.” Sarah said tucking a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear.

“Sorry. So that’s what he was planning! He’s been trying to keep me away from the rock, so naturally we are going to go there.”

“Naturally.” Sarah smiled. “Although I can’t go with you.”

“Why not?” Heather asked

“I can’t be seen as being involved in this Heather. My dad has already practically estranged me from the family, I don’t want to know what he would do next.”

“I understand. I guess I will have to beg my old treasure hunting partner to come around.”

“I’m sure it won’t be hard.” Sarah said slyly with a wink making Heather chuckle lightly. Sarah watched as Heather got up and walked off to go looking for Zack. She sighed, if Kurt found out about what she had done, she shuddered at the thought. She admitted to herself that she had some feelings for Zack, but what those feelings were was up in the air. Nostalgia from all those years ago, or maybe something more after seeing him now.

She wondered if she would ever have the courage to act on her feelings for any man. Even though she appeared to be a hot confident young woman, in reality she was insecure and shy, not an ideal combination to reciprocating anyone’s feelings. She sighed again, looking to see where Heather had gone, but not seeing her anywhere. Well that’s good at least, no excuse for me to go after them, she thought to herself before taking a sip of her forgotten glass of milk.
