A quiet afternoon

You let the horse wander, knowing a magical charm will keep it nearby. You and Lynn find a good spot inside the forest, sun-dappled and quiet. You lay out the food and have a few nibbles, but soon neither of you is hungry.

You sit, leaning against a tree as Lynn lies against your chest. She sighs happily as you run your fingers through her long brown hair. Her eyes close, and she visibly relaxes, content.

Not wanting to break the quiet peacefulness of the grove, you speak quietly. “Feeling better here, Lynn.”

Without opening her eyes, she smiles. “Very much so! It’s so quiet here. No one but us and the animals. I can hear the birds sing, the wind in the trees, and your heartbeat. I could stay here forever, Josh.”

You give her a squeeze. “It’s nice. We’re going to get there, Lynn. Our children will grow up in a world that is like this. It won’t be long.”

Lynn looks up at you, her lavender eyes seeming huge. “I know it’s selfish, but all I want is for our family to be safe. I get scared every time you leave that it’ll be the last time I see you. I love you, I love all the girls, and I love being together. I would sacrifice this whole world if it meant that our family was safe.”

You nod. “I understand, Lynn. There are times I wish we had just stayed in the new world and lived out our lives. But there’s something in me that made me want to use this power I have to change things for the better.”

Lynn smiles. “You did what feels right, and I love you for that. It’s the same instinct that had you rescue me, and redeem Kali. My selfish thoughts aren’t reality, it’s just daydreaming. What you’re doing is important, and I will always support you, Josh.”

You squeeze the little goblin, and she sighs happily, closing her eyes again. After a moment she chuckles. “I was planning on some sexy time out here, but I think I’ll save that for tonight. Right now, a nap in the arms of my big, strong hero king is perfect.”

You laugh quietly, and kiss the top of her head as she snuggles in and gets comfortable. You relax yourself, the warmth and comfort of your goblin lover dragging you towards a nap as well. You smile and close your eyes.
