Chapter 3 by DT-1010 DT-1010

What's next?

A person who controls others through special pheromones

This day turned out to be a complete disaster. Quite frankly, you should have stayed in bed, not even bothering to get up. That's how bad it was.

There morning had been uneventful; a standard breakfast inside your small apartment, going to work at STAR labs as a janitor, and then taking a break to go get some lunch. Sure, it wasn't the most exciting or impressive of careers that you'd ended up with, but you tried to make the best of it. And it wasn't that bad...

Alright, it sucked. A lot, actually. But you didn't have a lot of different options at the moment. There were many things you'd rather do than cleaning some laboratory, where most of the employees looked down on you for being not as smart or successful as you.

The way that some of the senior members would act as if you didn't even exist... it hurt. But as antagonizing as it was, you couldn't afford to lose this job, or otherwise you wouldn't be able to pay the rent.

Midday breaks were the only moments when you could get away from it all, walking back to your small office -- a very small room that acted as a closet at the same time -- and eating your lunch in peace.

However, this day had gone a bit differently.

You could still remember the general gist; a super villain attack in one of the main chemical laboratories, which you just so happened to be cleaning up back then. Of course, the details were fuzzy and vague.

During the battle between the villain and the superhero that had responded, you'd been thrown away by the bad guy. Straight into a closet with various chemicals. Luckily, none of them were life-threatening, or you wouldn't be here anymore.

Regardless, you were now lying in a hospital bed with quite a few bruises. At least the impact hadn't been too hard to break anything, so that was a relief.

But the damage had been done.

The company didn't have a policy about employees being hurt because of a villain attack, and your insurance itself wasn't great either. Which meant that you were now stuck with a medical bill that would make your wallet want to kill itself.

You sighed as you rested your head against the pillow. The important thing was that you were still alive. For all you know, that encounter could have costed you your life.

"Mr Doe?" Your attention was drawn to the nurse that walked into the room, carrying a clipboard at her side. She was rather attractive, and it was hard to not notice how her prominent bust pushed against her uniform. "I'm here to check up on you; don't be alarmed. Now, can you tell me if you've been feeling any dizziness or discomfort in general?"

"Oh, um, not really. My shoulder still aches and I'm feeling sore, but no real pain."

The blonde smiled. "That's good to hear. I'm sure we'll be able to release you soon."

"That's good news indeed. The first thing I'll do when I'm gone, is to grab some food. Any chance you can get me a candy bar from the vending machine in the hallway?" You asked politely, though the nurse frowned.

"Sorry, but I don't know if that's a good idea." She came closer to inspect your bandaged shoulder, leaning forward to get a better look. Perhaps it was your imagination, but it looked as if she paused to sniff you. The nurse's pupils dilated slightly, before she backed off. "I mean... I still have work to do as well."

Normally you would leave it at that, but today was not your day. The constant ignorance at work and the meta-human incident had worn your patience thin. Annoyed by the nurse, as well as the hunger that gnawed at your stomach, you couldn't contain yourself.

"No, I want you to get me something now."

As soon as those words left your mouth, you instantly regretted them. Talking to a nurse like that was not a good idea at all. Before you could apologize, however, the pretty blonde took another sniff and seemingly inhaled something. Much to your surprise, she smiled.

"Of course, mr Doe. Anything to make you happy."

She was quickly gone, exiting the room and leaving you behind. Confusion was the dominant emotion that you experienced at that moment. Why had she suddenly changed her mind? And what was up with all the sniffing?

But you didn't have to wait long for her to return; she came back with a handful of candy bars. There were all kind of brands, making you wonder if she hadn't been sure which one you would like.

"Here you go, sir. I didn't know which one you would like, so I bought one of each." The nurse said, confirming your suspicions.

You accepted the food with an awkward smile. "Ah, thank you... I appreciate it."

That seemed to make smile even more. Honestly, it was kind of creepy how she seemed to be interested in your happiness all of a sudden.

"Not a problem! If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to ask for nurse Donna."

This time, she left for good, leaving you with your thoughts. What just happened? That nurse had changed her mind right on the spot, for no apparent reason. Was it because of what you said? The forceful tone should have angered her. Right?

And that strange behavior... Something was wrong here. You raised a hand and took a tentative sniff, smelling something funny on your skin. It was faint, almost invisible, and yet you could sense it.

Admittedly, you didn't always take a shower -- paying water bills was something you hated -- but this foreign smell was new. It didn't stink, but you thought back to how the nurse had picked up on the scent before suddenly complying with your demand.

Any other line of thought you had was suddenly interrupted, though. Standing there in the door frame of your hospital room, all dressed up in her iconic outfit, was none other than the hero who had intervened at the laboratory.
