A parents' love

My phone is ringing and the caller ID is displaying my parents' phone number. The prospect of talking to my parents does not usually make me nervous since I always had a good relationship with my parents while I was growing up, but today is different. I am seriously dating a woman for the first time in my life and I have absolutely no idea how this new change in my life is going to affect the people who brought me into this world. I did not think that it was possible for me to head down this path, but my business partner Leah has affected me in ways that I had never thought possible. Her beauty and her confidence have made me a complete person.

I would have been better off if I had been a lesbian my whole life. At least I would known how my parents would feel about it. I wonder how Sereena handles these situations. Maybe I should ask her for some advice. I have heard stories about parents disowning a child who goes down this path. Even though I am very nervous about accepting this call, I know that I do not have I choice but to take this call and face the consequences of my actions. If I do not, Leah might get the idea that I am ashamed of her, and I am not. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

"Hello?" I spoke into the phone.

"We called to congratulate you on winning the Blackbourne Award," Mom lightly cheered.

"We are very proud of you!" Dad blared.

"You must be using the speaker phone," I guessed.

"You know us," Mom reminded me. "We are no strangers to technology."

"How do you feel about winning the award?" Dad wondered out loud.

"It has certainly took a lot of worry off all of our minds," I let loose. "The prize money will assure that we will be writing meaningful articles for a long time."

"How is your life besides that?" Dad pressed.

"How is your love life?" Mom pried.

I knew that this question would come up. Parents are so predictable.

"Well... I am seeing someone."

"Do you think that you could bring him over to meet us?" Mom nudged.

"I... I don't know..." I squeaked.

"What's the problem?" Dad questioned.

"You see..." I paused.

"If there is something is wrong than tell us," Dad ordered. "Maybe we can help."

"The thing is that I am serious about someone, but I am dating a woman."

My parents didn't say anything for a few seconds. I can't take this. I just wish that they would say something and get it over with. Maybe I can diffuse this situation before it blows up in my face.

"I know that this is probably upsetting you, but please let me try to explain myself."

"We aren't upset," Mom confided.

"We are just a little shocked," Dad added. "You never gave us any indication that you would go down this route. Do we know her?"

"I am in love with my business partner Leah. You probably saw our picture in the paper. She is the one standing next to me."

"She looks pretty," Mom conceded.

"The bottom line is that we want you to be happy," Dad assured me. "Leah must be a special lady if she can get you to jump ships."

"She is!" I proclaimed.

"Do you think that we could meet her this weekend?" Mom begged.

"I'd have to get back to back to you on that," I answered. "Leah is the guardian of her little sister Andi. Could she come too? If Andi could come with us then Leah wouldn't have to find a sitter."

"That would be fine," Dad accepted.

"I'll call you back once we get everything settled," I mused.

"Bye!" Mom and Dad said together just before hanging up.

I laid back on my bed and let out a breath a relief. My parents not only accept me dating a woman, but they also accept me dating someone of a different race. I am White and Leah is African-American. I guess I underestimated my parents love for me.

"Is everything okay?" Leah probed.

"Always was," I joked with a smile.

"Ready to go to work?" Leah pressed.

"You bet!" I answered with glee while getting up to leave with my girlfriend.
