Chapter 8 by FallenSaint FallenSaint

Does she escape?

A narrow escape!

More of the beasts were beginning to come out of the tunnel she had just left, and the closes one was floundering in the shallows where Paxia had been standing. Trying to get into the river meant forcing her way past the creature, but Helena wasn't sure she could fight it and the ones coming from behind at the same time... But as luck would have it, she didn't have to fight it. Another of the creatures trying to come from where the waterfall was launched itself at her... And missed. It smacked into the one in front of her and both creatures were sent flying into the water. The creatures struggled and sank to the bottom quickly. They couldn't swim! Seeing an opening, Helena flug herself into the water just as one of the creatures behind her tried to grab her.

She tried to keep herself afloat as the river swept her along, but Helena wasn't strong enough to fight the fast moving current. At one point the current dragged her under and sent her spinning underwater. While she was under, Helena saw that she wasn't alone. The two monsters were being pushed along with her and it seemed that they were still alive, if their flailing limbs were any indication. Now she had even more to worry about. She had to figure out a way to.... Something struck Helena on the head and everything went dark.

Helena woke up some time later, coughing water. She was in another natural "room" like the one earlier. It even had some of the mushrooms that were giving off a soft glow that made the room somewhat visible. Glancing around, Helena could see that there were three exits. One was continuing to let the river wash her away. The bump on her head and dents in her breast plate made her feel that wasn't the best idea. There was another exit across the river that she could possibly make it to if she focused completely on getting across. She judged she would be swept at least a little ways down the river but could backtrack. The third exit was on her side of the room and led into another natural tunnel system. She also saw that her sword had washed up nearby. Along with what she hoped was the corpse of one of the creatures.

She stood from where she had lay coughing water and carefully retrieved her sword and put it back in its scabbard. The creature wasn't moving, but she wasn't sure it was safe to get close to it. Helena shook her head and looked around again. How long had she been out? Was it still day time or had night fallen? Were her friends safe? There were so many questions in her head. Looking around, she knew that there were decisions to be made. Her whole body was sore, so she wondered if she should she rest for a bit. On the other hand, getting to safety was the priority so maybe she should choose an exit? Or possibly check to see if the beast is actually dead?

What does she decided to do next?
