A mother's regret

Thursday morning arrived and Jane got up early. She went downstairs to put the kettle on. Not yet ready to deal with what happened between her and Steven the previous night. She busied herself, giving the living room a glance over and picking up her robe that she left on the floor. "How am I going to deal with this" She thought aloud. Returning to the kitchen to make tea. She heard a door upstairs open. Hoping that it would be Jade, so she wouldn't have to talk with Steven just yet. But her hopes were dashed when Steven appeared at the kitchen door. Both unable to look at each other. Jane sat at the breakfast table and starred at the wooden surface. Steven had made his tea and decided it would be best if he went straight back to his room. Before he left the room. Jane stopped him.

"Steven. Stay. We have to talk." He stopped in his tracks. Massively confused over events from last night.

"I know mum. But I'm not sure how we can talk about it. I mean. We fucked last night. I saw something in your eye last night. Someone I didn't recognise." He sat on the opposite side of the table. "What got into you last night?"

"I have no idea. I haven't been with anyone for a long time. The last time I slept with anyone was 4 years ago. And he blew it with me and his marriage because of it. I don't know whether it was because you're the one guy I trust or that I was just that horny I lost control. But to do it with my son was just wrong, on so many levels."

"Mum. I know things haven't gone your way with guys. But that. You've always been in control of everything. Never letting things get the upper hand on you. As for him, I remember the guy you're talking about and it serves him right. But that doesn't explain why you seduced me last night.

"I can't explain it. I got worse as the day went on. After Jade went out, I couldn't help myself. I've looked back over last night and I didn't even recognise myself. I only ever dressed like that for your dad."

"I don't want that image." Holding his hand up to stop her going any further. "Besides, It's not just the fact that you seduced me. From the sound of it mum, you're not using anything. You wanted me to get you pregnant last night."

"I know. That fact hasn't been lost on me. Like your sister, I'm allergic to the pill so tend to rely on condoms. The thought didn't even cross my mind until afterwards. Chances are I will be pregnant. You have any idea how much you squirted into me?"

"Yes mum. I do. That's why I try not to play with myself anymore unless I'm in the shower. Another gift from my cure. I'm sorry I let it happen. I should've got out of there quicker."

"No Steven. It's my fault. I must have let frustration get the better of me. But you'll make a woman a very happy one with what you have. Sorry to say this if it embarrasses you but." Jane paused. "Even though you didn't last as long as I thought you would. You have a good technique. Even your dad couldn't get me off that quick, but I just want to know one thing. Now that you've seen me like that. Do I still look good for my age?"

"Yes mum. You are still a very attractive woman. God help the poor guy you next end up with if you wear that again. You might give him a heart attack." They both let out an awkward but short laugh.

"Maybe, You never know. I better phone the doctor up and see if I can get anything to stop any possible pregnancy. I better come up with a decent line in case they ask anything. I doubt they will, but just in case."

Just as Jane said that. Jade came out of her room and came downstairs. Upon entering the kitchen, she saw both Steven and her mum sitting at the table. "Glad you're both here. Don't go anywhere. Either of you. We could have a big problem. Just let me make some tea and we'll talk. It's really important." Jade then re-boiled the kettle and made her cup, then sat at the table with them. "Stevie. What do you remember from last night?"

Thinking they had been found out. Jane went on the defensive. "Nothing happened last night. We just spent the night doing bugger all. How was your night by the way?"

"That's what I'm getting at mum. Stevie. Do you remember what happened when you came to pick me up?" Jade had a worried look on her.

"No, not much. I remember getting to the nightclub. Oh by the way mum. I borrowed the car to pick Jade up last night. Some creepy guy wouldn't leave her alone so I wanted to get there as soon as. I had a slight argument with the guy on the door. Beyond that, It's a blank until I escorted Jade out the door. Why? Is it important."

"Important. Stevie you pushed the guy so hard, he went flying across the dance floor. There was at least 15 people that went down when he hit their legs. Not to mention the fact that he went at least 20 feet across the room from your push. But it was you eyes. Don't you know?

"Know what Jade. What about my eyes?

"They changed Stevie. It was like looking into the eyes of." Jade struggled to find a reference that they would all understand. "Best thing I can say is. It was like looking into the eyes of, an Autobot. They glowed a bright blue. Like you head blue lights behind them." Both Jane and Steven looked at Jade. "I'm serious guys. We better switch BBC news on. I'm telling you now. The cat's out of the bag," They got up and rushed to the living room and switched the telly on to see if anything came up. Which it did. Just then Steven's phone rung.

"It's John." He then answered. "Hiya mate. I suppose you heard." The call was short. With Steven telling John that it was him the news was talking about. Jade was busy what's apping her friends not to say anything to the media. Making it clear that it was a matter of urgency that they keep it quiet that they know the bright eyed stranger. They all agreed. They all liked Steven, A couple of them fancied him, but didn't want anything to cause problems between the friendship they had with Jade.

Jane turned off the T.V. "I think It's best you keep a low profile Steven. Give people time to forget your face. But you have to find a way to control things before you do anything like that again. You was right about what you said about causing more harm than good. Once you get used to how this works, you'll be fine. I believe that."

"Thank you mum. I'm not going anywhere now. Anyway, John said he's coming over. He wants to know what happened. Jade, Can you stay here. I might need your help explaining to John what happened last night."

"Yeah. No problem. Mum, would you be able to get the rest of the week off of work. We've got a lot to get our heads round now."

"I've already phoned in and asked for emergency leave. How little I knew THIS was going to be the main reason why."

"Yeah. But I have a confession to make myself."

"I don't want to hear it if it's anything I don't want hear." Jane was fearing that he was looking to do it again with her.

"No mum. John told me something before I went hospital a few weeks back. Before I was ready to die and he wanted me to know something. Something he was scared to admit to anyone. Especially you, Jade." Jade looked at Steven.

"He likes me?" Steven nodded. "Wow. Tell him to ask me out. I like him too."

Jane felt a massive weight lift of her shoulders. "Thank god for that." Her fears laid to rest. "That just leaves you now Steven. I hope you have your eyes on someone when you get your head sorted."

"Maybe mum. Maybe." Still wresting with his feelings. "I'm not sure of anything at the moment."
