Chapter 53

What's next?
A meeting with Joan
Watson walks into calculus and find an open chair next to Joan. The teacher hands the class a group project to work on, to be divided into groups of two.
Joan and Watson pair off into their self assigned study groups. His mind still lingered on his conversation with Bonnie. Why'd she get so freaked out? He must've triggered something deep within her. He wondered what she could have gone through or is going through to cause her to react that way. She's a very complicated person, far more so than he had imagined, but Watson liked complicated things, especially girls. He'd try to find her later, but for now Joan. Question is, how much should he tease her?
They began to chit chat and divide up the math problems. A question here, an explanation there, nothing heavy to start with.
"So we're on for Friday?" He asked.
"Yeah should be, at least my parents haven't changed their minds."
"How late do they usually stay out?"
"Why? You counting?"
"Well, if I'm to conduct a thorough interview, I'll need a generous time period to do so, don't you agree?"
Her mind melted a bit, but she couldn't let it show on her face. But beneath her clothes, under her jeans, inside her purple cotton panties, a tingle had begun.
Joan loved being spoken to so forthrightly, so directly, she loved that his speech was full of purpose. She was going to be the object of his attention for hours. It's all she's been thinking about since it was proposed. Her intelligence does her no favors. She's always looking for a man who can put her in her place, can be a little forceful, can dominate her intellectually or with his speech. Watson may not be as intelligent. In fact he was sure he wasn't, but he saw through her, he understood her, and that is where his advantage lay. He didn't need to dominate her intellectually as long as she knew that it never phased him. His confidence came from somewhere else. Joan didn't really understand that. All of her confidence came from her brain, her mind and intellect. Seeing this boy, whose speech was dynamic, confident, and unaffected by her show of strength, made her long for his approval. Bonnie was right, he had her right where he wanted her.
"Okay you have to let me prepare a bit for this interview, can I have a list of topics or questions you'll ask? If I'm to give the best showing of myself, I need to prepare a little."
"No that's true-- the esteemed position of my math tutor is highly sought after, many candidates, it would be unfair to not give you some of the topics beforehand."
"Excuse me? Many candidates?" She knew it was a bit, but her ego was genuinely bruised. Such a fragile heart.
"What, do you think you'd be a shoe-in? Please Joan, let's be serious here."
"I'm clearly the best qualified! Who the hell else would even be in contention?"
Watson chuckled, "Joan Joan not so loud."
Embarrassed, blushing, and looking around, "Soorryy, it seems I really want to be your tutor..."
"It does seem that way." He quickly darted his eyes from her face to her perky chest and waist and then back up to her eyes. She definitely noticed that examination.
"You--you don't want me to be your tutor?" He had a feeling tutor didn't actually mean tutor.
"Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what I want. It's my education that is being taken into consideration."
"Yes, of course, but if you had to say who you wanted..."
Watson leaned in to speak in her ear. "Well Joan, if I had to say, I'd say you're definitely a front runner, but you're going to have to prove yourself. Can you do that for me? Can you show me you deserve it?"
“I will… I’ll show you… I’ll be the best tutor you’ve ever had…” she whispers back in his ear, her foot rubbing up against his calf under the table.
“And how will you do that?”
“I’ll…I’ll—” Aw come on Joan, such lack of quick wit, we expected more. Watson noticed her hand shaking a bit under the table. “I have some unique ideas for…positive reinforcement…” Ah, there it is Joan, very nice.
They looked at each other and giggled. “But seriously till what time Friday?” He asked.
“Ehm let’s say 9pm to be safe. They’ll get back after that, but they don’t exactly know you’re coming…”
“Oh, wouldn’t like you having a boy alone in the house?”
“No, certainly would not…” She smirked at him.
“Probably for good reason.”
“Hey, I’ve never had a boy over before.”
“Never?”
“My dad has high standards, and so do I.”
“Can’t imagine why I’m coming over then.”
“Yeah…me neither.”
