Chapter 5 by Control Freak Control Freak

Who is approaching? What happens to Becky?

A man in an impeccable white suit

The blonde-haired man walking up to Roger was wearing an impeccably clean white suit, which stands out in the darkness surrounding him like a beacon. Oddly enough, though the man carries no source of light, he seems to be having no trouble navigating the inky black halls of the mansion.

"Having a bit of trouble with the door?" the man asks.

"Oh thank God!" Roger exclaims, "I need some help! This door closed on my wife and she's locked in!"

"Oh that does sound rather urgent," the man says with a slight frown, "Here, let me try."

Roger steps aside to give the stranger access the door. The blonde man approaches the door and, with a gentle turn of the knob, effortlessly opens the door. Roger covers his eyes as warm orange light poured out of the doorway, momentarily blinding him.

"Hmm... well I suppose you must have loosened it for me," he heard the man say, "But I don't see anyone else in here."

Roger blinks to clear his vision, and looks into the room. A round empty table sits in the center, with two wooden chairs on opposite ends of it. Lit candles in sconces lining the walls illuminate the otherwise empty room.

"N-No, that's impossible!" Roger exclaims, stepping into the room, "She was just in here, I saw her go in here!"

"Perhaps she found another way out?" the man suggests, idly looking around the room. Roger would be more inclined to believe him if there were any other doors visible in the room. But the room itself is empty, other than the table, chairs, and candles.

"Where could she have gone...?" Roger asks himself aloud.

"Hard to say," the man says, walking over to the table, "This house is quite large after all. I suspect even your great-uncle never fully explored its secrets."

Roger's attention turns towards the man at this statement, "You knew my great-uncle?"

"I did indeed," the man responded, "He and I were rather close... well, I suppose 'business partners' is as good a term as any to refer to our relationship. I helped him build his fortune and acquire this house, among other things."

"Other things?" Roger asks.

"A lot of other things," the man emphasizes as he sits down in one of the empty chairs, before gesturing to the other one across the table, "Please, have a seat."

"I... I need to find Becky..." Roger stammers, though even as he speaks he finds himself pulling out the chair and sitting down.

"Don't worry about her, she'll be fine," the man assures him, "Now Roger, it seems like you've inherited quite a lot from your great-uncle..."

"You know who I am?" Roger asks.

"Of course," the man replies, "Who do you think sent you the invitation to come here?"

"So you're what, his lawyer?" Roger asks.

The man laughs, "Oh no no no. I'm just here to make sure the right people get their due."

Roger suddenly feels uneasy. And yet, the thought of standing up to leave only crosses his mind for the briefest of moments before being overwhelmed by the need to hear this man out. So instead he asks, "Who are you?"

The man gives Roger a smile he couldn't help but find charming despite the circumstances, "You can call me Mr. Light. And now that introductions are out of the way, there's something the two of us need to discuss."

What does this 'Mr. Light' want to talk about? And perhaps more importantly, what happened to Becky?
