Chapter 8 by Zebra Zebra

So, Gellian and Jason come of age... What does fate have in store for each of the twins?

A game of avoid the throne...

Jason broke the silence, a sly grin spreading across his handsome face. "You know you'd be a far better king than I ever could, brother. You have a head for politics and the military men love you. I'm only good at charming maidens and making merry."

Gellian scoffed. "Don't sell yourself short, dear brother... for the sheep find you even more charming than the maidens. The people adore you. They would follow a king Jason wherever you led. And you have a quick mind, even if you hide it behind that boyish smile.

Jason waved a hand dismissively. "Nonsense. I'm just a simple man of leisure. Leave the heavy lifting of ruling to you. You'll do a fine job."

Gellian leaned forward, dark eyes flashing. "And I suppose you'd be happy with a quiet life as a country lord? No ambitions at all?"

Jason met his brother's gaze steadily, a hint of steel beneath the charm. "I'm content in my role as the spare. You're the true heir, always have been. I'm merely here to support you and keep the people's spirits high. That is my duty."

The brothers stared each other down, an unspoken challenge hanging in the air. The coronation was still a year away. But already it seemed, the race to foster off the crown had begun…

Gellian stood before the Regency Council, his shoulders squared and back straight despite the heavy weight of the crown he wore upon his brow. His dark eyes swept over the sea of stern faces... nobles and clergy who would decide his brother's future. No, their future. The kingdom's future.

He began to speak, his rich baritone filling the hall. "Esteemed members of the Council, it is with a heavy heart that I stand before you today to make a most unusual request."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd and Gellian paused, waiting for silence to fall once more.

"For the past 17 years, my brother Jason and I have been inseparable. Two halves of a whole, the people called us, the perfect balance of strength and charm. But I come to you today to beg that you consider making my brother the true heir."

Gasps and whispers erupted. Gellian plowed ahead, determined. "I have studied the histories, pored over the sacred tomes. And I have come to believe that it is not I who is destined to wear the crown, but my brother."

He ticked off the points on his fingers. "Jason has the charisma and popularity to win the hearts of the people and hold their loyalty. His silver tongue can sway even the harshest critics. And he possesses a keen political acumen that is matched only by his tactical brilliance. He is a leader who could unite our kingdom in peace and prosperity."

Gellian's voice rang out. "I would be honored to serve as your king, should the Council decree it. But I know in my heart it should be my brother who sits upon the throne. Jason is the right choice. For all of us."

He sank into a deep bow, head bowed and heart hammering, as gasps and astonished mutterings filled the chamber. The Council would never agree to this. Would they?

And here is Jason making the case for his beloved brother... to be saddled with the responsibly of wearing the crown.

"I know I am the elder by mere seconds. But in my heart, I have always known Gellian was meant to rule. He has a brilliant mind for strategy and diplomacy. He's beloved by our armies for leading them to victory. And he has the wisdom and maturity to be an excellent king."

Jason placed a hand on Gellian's shoulder. "I, on the other hand, am merely a man of leisure and revelry. My only ambition is to see my brother take the throne and rule justly. I am content to be his loyal prince consort."

The crowd began to whisper and mutter. The regents leaned forward, intrigued. Gellian looked stunned, then angry. He shrugged off Jason's hand and turned to the council.

"Forgive me, Your Graces, but I must object. My brother is far too modest. He is beloved by the people. His easy charm and quick wit would be a boon to the realm. And while I am flattered, I believe Jason should have the honor of being named heir."

The brothers faced each other, a crackling energy between them. Jason smiled enigmatically while Gillian seethed. The council members looked from one twin to the other, sensing the undercurrent of rivalry beneath the humility. But in that very moment a worn and mud splattered messenger burst into the room, with a look of terror on his face.

All heads turned as he dropped to his knees before the dais. "The kingdom is under attack! A horde of Orcs are marching from the great western forest, and a Goblin raiding party is burning the northern villages,"

A collective gasp went up from the nobles. The regents exchanged worried glances. This was the moment of truth... how would the princes respond in a time of crisis? Jason and Gellian looked at each other, a silent understanding passing between them. No more games... it was time for action.

Jason was the first to move. He grabbed a sword from a nearby guard and leaped onto a table, addressing the shocked crowd. "I will lead the defenses against the Orcs. My brother Gellian will take the northern forces to repel the Goblins!"

He held out a hand to Gellian. The younger brother hesitated for a split second, then clasped Jason's arm in a warrior's handshake. "Aye, brother. May our blades sing and our enemies tremble before our might. For the kingdom!"

The brothers locked eyes, pride and affection shining in both their grins. Then they turned to the council. "Your graces, we must move swiftly. Jason will secure the western defenses, Gellian will rout the Goblin threat to the north. We will return victorious!"

And with that, the twins strode out of the hall together, their strides purposeful and sure as they went to rally their armies. The nobles murmured in awe at the sight of them... the princes united in purpose, ready to defend their land. Perhaps there was a reason they were both in the running for heir…

Fox's go to war...
