A crisis of confidence

As you head upstairs, you’re surprised to see Samara fall into step beside you. She looks at you curiously. “I wouldn’t expect to see you down in the proper dungeon. You don’t seem to be the type to enjoy it there.”

You shake your head. “I don’t. But last night a group of idiots tried to kill me, and we captured the leader alive. I just spent some time getting insulted and yelled at. Apparently I’m a deviant and a pervert.”

Samara raises an eyebrow and you chuckle. “To answer your unspoken question, yes, I am both those things, but not for the reasons he says. He’s one of the fanatics that Humanitas is creating now.”

She nods. “I see. Another crime laid at my fathers feet. I don’t know what he was thinking, beyond chaos.”

You shrug. “It doesn’t matter. The problem is breaking them without hurting the innocent people who just want to live their lives. But enough about that for now. I believe it’s close to lunchtime, would you like to come introduce yourself to the girls? This time without a fight?”

Samara stops and looks at you. “Just like that? No trial period, no test of loyalty, not even an oath?”

You shake your head. “This isn’t a cult, or a religion. We’re family. I’d be lying if I told you I completely trust you, Samara, but we have to start somewhere. Introductions are generally a good place to start.”

She looks nervous now. “And will they accept me?”

You shrug. “Eventually, assuming you’re genuine. Kali already does. Sadie probably will too. The rest…it will take time. Some of the girls are very protective of me.”

Samara nods. “I know you’re having sex with all of them. Am I expected to come to your bed as well?”

You shake your head. “Only if you want to. I would never **** myself on someone. Besides, it’s not like I’m lacking in beautiful women to sleep with.”

Samara chuckles. “Fair enough. Can I ask, though, why me? Why did you offer this to me?”

You think for a minute. “Honestly, I went with my gut feeling. Especially after Kali, I realized that being half human changes demons somehow. It was still a risk, but the way you basically gave yourself up to us told me you were having doubts anyway. Plus, Kali insisted we try.”

Samara sighs. “It’s just…you know I’ve done horrible things, right? You don’t survive as a Lilim by being gentle…”

You nod. “I know. And you’re going to have to deal with that guilt as you learn to be a good person. But everyone deserves a chance to redeem themselves. Here’s your chance. It won’t be easy, but if you genuinely want it, we will be here to support you. That’s what a good family does.”

She looks down, and you hear her quietly say, “Thank you.”

She looks back up at you and nods. “Ok. Let’s go, I’m ready.”
