What's next?
A cleric, a cleric, a cleric, ..., and a cleric walk into an Inn...
"It's just my luck that i get lost in these woods.", Lilith sighs. A young cleric, she is currently traversing the world, helping those in need, though right now, she would appreciate to get some help instead. A few people in a nearby village went missing in the forest, and, the good hearted soul she is, Lilith decided to look into the case. After several hours of wandering though, she not only did not find any of the villagers, but got hopelessly lost herself in the middle of the woods.
"The only thing missing now is...", Lilith says to herself, when suddenly, it starts to rain. "...rain. Damn, the gods seam to feel reeeeally funny today." She rolls her eyes and starts moving faster through the woods, trying to find a shelter from the rain. Suddenly, she spots some lights, which, after getting closer, reveal themselves to be light shining out of the windows of an Inn. "Hmmm, what is an Inn doing in the middle of this woods? I feel like this is no ordinary building...", she thinks to herself, "... but also i don't wanna keep standing out in this rain, so screw it.".
She runs towards the door of the Inn, getting a glimpse of the Inn's sign. In the twilight of the late hours and the rain, she only can vagualy make out two similar looking figures depicted on the sign, and from the name, she can only read "T.e M..ro..d F.y", before heading inside.
Inside, the Inn looks pretty much how you would expect: several tables with 6 seats each, a candle on each of them illuminating the room, stairs probably leading upwards to the bedrooms, a fireplace on the right side keeping the Inn cozy warm and a bar on the left side, with a young man cleaning some mugs. He turns around as Lilith enters, greeting her with a warm smile.
"Ah, a guest. Welcome to my humble Inn. Please, warm and dry yourself at the fire and then take a seat. You are probably hungry, i am going to make you something to fill your belly, only going to take a few minutes.", he says in a cheerfull voice, before going into the kitchen on the back of the bar, humming softly.
"Oh, ehm, thank you." Lilith is still slightly suspicious, it's a weird place for an Inn to be, but she doesn't see anything dangerous, so she follows the bartender's advice, spening a few minutes in front of the cozy fire to dry and warm herself, before taking a seat at a table. A few moments later, the young Innkeeper comes back with some food and a drink. "Here, a portion steak with some stir-fried vegetable and a cup of tea. Ahh, and don't worry about payment, people usually end up here because they go lost, so this one is on the house to get you back some energy.", he says with a warm smile.
A voice inside Lilith's head tell her to be cautious. Her many travels taught her that not everything is as it seems, and something here does seem suspicious. The Inn seems to be here a bit too conviniently and the Innkeeper a bit too friendly. On the other hand, this is a world of strange things after all, and it's not fair to assume a trap or a scheme behind every corner. Plus, the food looks delecious and Lilith really has gone hungry from all the wandering around in the woods.
"Thank you, i am honestly starving. I will make sure to pay back your favour tomorrow, if you need anything.", Lilith says to the Innkeeper. "Thats very kind of you Miss, I am sure we will find something i need help with. But for now, enjoy your meal."
And with that, the Innkeeper goes back behind the bar. Lilith enjoys the meal the Innkeeper made for her, it looked already tasty, but the actual taste was even better than expected. After finishing her meal, Lilith lets out a soft yawn. She has been running around all day after all, its been getting late, and the meal was very filling, she feels tired now and ready to hop into a comfy bed. She stand up and walks towards the bar. "How much for one night, Sir?", she asks the young Innkeeper. "Oh nono, don't worry about that, you look like you can hardly keep your eyes open. Here, take room 22 and get a good nights rest.", he says, handing her the key. "Really? Oh, thanks again, as said, i will repay your kindness....", she says, interrupting herself with a big yawn, "... but right now, i reaally need some sleep. Good night, Sir."
Lilith walks up the stairs into a hallway with several rooms at each side. After a bit, she finds the room 22, unlocking it with the key and walking inside. She enters a simple bedroom, with a single bed, a little nightstand and a chest to store her belonging in front of the bed. Too tired to do anything else, she walks straight to the bed and lays down, immidiately falling asleep.
After a while, Lilith wakes up, rested, and back full of energy. She hears the rain still drumming on the Inn's ceiling, and when looking outside the window, it seems like its still night. "Huh, thats strange, it feels like i slept for hours, it should be morning already.", she thinks to herself. With not really anything else to do, Lilith stands up from the double-bed, going downstairs, intending to ask the Innkeeper if he knows anything about the missing villagers or if he knows how to leave the forest.
When she enters the base floor however, Lilith doesn't see the Innkeeper anywhere. Instead someone else is here, apperently just having entered the Inn and looking around for anyone. When they looked at each other, both let out a surprised gasp. The person looking around looks exactly like herself! Both are rubbing their eyes in disbelief. "I must still be sleeping", Lilith thinks to herself, but when she opens her eyes again, she is still looking into a spit mirror image of herself. "Who are you?", both ask. "My name is Lilith. Wait, you are Lilith too? That can't be.", they say in sync.
Feeling like shouting over half the room is not very helpfull, Lilith comes down the rest of the stairs, and both take a seat on one of the tables. They check each other throughly, showing each other their unique star-shaped birthmark at their left ear, answering things about each other only Lilith could knew. But no matter how much they checked, they result was always the same: both are Lilith.
"What is happening here? Why are there suddenly two of me...us?" Lilith A asks. "I don't know, i was just wandering through the woods to search for the missing villagers till dawn, got lost, then suddenly this damn rain started, and i found this Inn.", Lilith B answers.
Lilith A: "Waitwaitwait, but its already raining for hours? I mean, i slept through most of it, but it already rained before i went to bed this evening."
Lilith B: "But it just got dark, how could you already have slept for several hours?"
Lilith A: "Hmm, seems like my gut feeling was right, something is not right here."
Lilith B: "Well, then maybe we should leave this place before more weird...."
Suddenly, the door opens again, and, to the Lilith's surprise, another Lilith has entered the Inn.
Lilith B: "...things happen."
Lilith C: "What is going on here? Who are you two?"
Lilith A: "Well, it might be hard to believe, but we are both Lilith. And don't bother with the usual checks, we two already did that and i am sure we will get the same result when we check each other as well."
Lilith C: "Ok, that definitly strange, but unless you are a very convincing Illusion, i know myself enough to know when i am telling the truth, no matter how strange it sounds."
"As said, we better leave now, something is definitly strange with this Inn.", Lilith B says as she and Lilith A stand up. The 3 of them then go through the exit together.... only to end up in the Inn, with 3 Liliths sitting at a table, all of them looking in surprise at them.
"Dang, seems like this is going to be one loooong weird night." Lilith A says sighing.
