Chapter 8 by Moot Moot

What's next?

A choice

"Processed? The fuck do you mean by that? What am I being processed into?" Jessica asked, she was still stuck on the permit scenario. "We gotta process you as a non permit holder and then place you in our holding cells until someone volunteers to claim you and allow you to roam freely again!" The cashier explained and Mildred nodded in agreement.

Jessica crossed her eyebrows, questioning the logic and incredibly confused. "Hold on a sec you skipped like twenty pages, why can't I just go out and buy myself a permit? If it means getting rid of you freaks I'll happily spend money!" Jessica suggested, she didn't want to go through with whatever they had planned for her. "Because people who don't have permits are a danger and menace to our society in Pinesdale. The whole point of the permit system is to retain citizens with good backgrounds and lawful behaviours, eradicating those who wish to cause trouble and bring Pinesdale down as a community." Mildred explained, her tone getting frustrated the more she spoke.

Jessica suddenly realised something. "Holy shit, that's how you guys have managed to keep a nearly no crime rate record, you're filtering out the 'bad' people and only keeping the ones you deem acceptable!" Jessica accused, feeling good to have almost cracked the case. The cashier turned to Mildred. "She's pretty good, shame she had to waste her life as a non permit holder!" She chuckled with Mildred.

Jessica grew even more frustrated, furious that nobody was listening to her. "SHE is right here! And SHE still has a thousand questions, like what the fuck are my options!?" Jessica yelled. "Well you have two options really. You can simply refuse this service, it is optional after all, but we will call the cops and they'll arrest within a few hours, taking you to the station and probably jail. Or, you can accept our service, where we'll keep you here and try to sell you to a volunteer who is responsible and can ensure you will not cause trouble while roaming free." The cashier explained.

Jessica didn't like her options, if she refused the service she would be free and could run but the police would likely find her. However, if she accepted the service, who knows what could happen. The cashier hasn't explained much at all, meaning Jessica could be walking into a fate worse than jail for all she knew. Jessica pondered, unsure what to choose.

What will Jessica choose?
