Chapter 117 by Jpyric Jpyric

An interesting morning, already!

A calm

Despite the worry caused by the catastrophic failure of the mission, the next few weeks are surprisingly quiet. Kael and Ria spend a lot of time working with Lord Greyheart, observing and learning how he rules the new kingdom. The greatest lesson they learn, though, is how to delegate.

“If you try to accomplish everything on your own, you’ll end up accomplishing nothing. Your aides and advisors are there for just that reason.”

That lesson is driven home with his handling of Rastus Malen’s…aftermath. Kael is surprised when Lord Greyheart declines to go himself, instead sending a team out to inspect the ruins in his stead. Ria seems to catch on faster, however, realizing that there is little to see, and much to risk by going personally.

The investigation reveals little, sadly. There’s no sign of Rastus, though the mage sent along says that nothing inside could have survived such a powerful explosion, which was clearly magical in nature. However, the residual magic of the attack also obliterated any evidence left behind, so it’s possible that the man still lived.

As the days pass, another reason for Lord Greyheart’s **** to leave the palace becomes apparent. The curse is taking its toll on him. Even at his age and missing an arm, he has always been hale and hearty, but now…the deterioration is becoming obvious. He grows more pale by the day, and it’s clear he isn’t sleeping well. Day by day he grows weaker, not to the point of feebleness, but it’s clear he’s fading.

Finally, one day he pulls Kael and Ria aside to speak privately. “Tonight, we are having a…dinner. I’d like all my champions and their companions to attend. I have announcements for all of you.”

Kael and Ria share a glance, and Kael speaks up. “Of course, my lord. What’s this about?”

Lord Greyheart smiles, though it seems ****. “The future.”

Ria grimaces. “That seems…ominous.”

Lord Greyheart chuckles and pats her on the shoulder. “Only because you see me wasting away. Don’t shake your heads, I know its obvious. Don’t worry, I’m not dead yet. I still have things to do. This is part of that. Please, allow me my drama.”

Kael can’t help a smile, despite the lump in his throat. “Of course, my lord. We’ll be there, along with Evie and Gabby.”

Lord Greyheart smiles, nodding. “Good. I’ll see you in a few hours, then.”

With that, he turns, walking slowly away. Kael and Ria watch him go, then turn away themselves.

What could this be about?
