What do you use to open the gate?
A Spellbook (Wizard) (Neutral Good)
You coursed through the small, claustrophobically dense room. You had almost no familiarity with these weapons in a practical sense; though there were a few basic weapons like clubs you could use to keep yourself safe, should it prove necessary. You could at least name most of them, something that most couldn't say. Your family had a long lineage of mastery of arms and heroics to one degree or another; a lineage you'd tried to continue with little success. Getting caught and housed in here surely wouldn't help that problem any, however that happened.
Rather than trying to mope on how you got into this problem and the possible dishonor, you needed to focus on how to get out. You slowly stumbled on a possible answer, looking at a small collection of books on a thick wooden shelf. Grabbing the largest of the lot, a hefty, aged text in a red cover, it had the feeling of familiarity about it, though you didn't recall seeing it before. That had swiftly changed course as you opened it to where one of the many bound ribbons held place as a bookmark. It was a spellbook; not only that, it was your, spellbook. It would have had to be; the odds that there be two identical books with the cantrips, and spells, written out in the exact order as you, in the exact fashion, would be close to impossible. As you held the book open in both hands, you felt a sudden shift to the weight, causing you to wince.
Getting your bearings, your entire sense of reality shifted. Standing on the open pages was a small black cat, in any way appearing common and domesticated, if not the black, raven like wings atop it. She was yours, not just your pet, but your familiar, a common companion both in and out of adventures. The startled moment also seemingly shook you out of wherever you thought you were and into familiar territory, in a small office space of the local Pathfinder's Guild.
"Why hello, my little friend" you gave her a familiar pat on her head, "I guess I have you to thank for whatever that was that just happened. Would you believe it, miss Bande? Suddenly appearing in a room with no way in and no way out. It's so bizarre, but in that moment, it felt so real." Bande, letting a tiny meowing out before jumping to your shoulder, seemingly weightless upon landing, understood but was not much of a conversationalist.
"Well, real or not, getting me out of that deserves a treat, what do you think?" Before waiting for the obvious positive response, you got up out of your tiny office in search of something in the manner of a snack, for either of you. The central dining hall was small for a Pathfinder Hall, so you'd been told, but it still kept small amounts of bread or fruit available for members in between Dinner and Supper. You plucked a few grapes to share, focusing on your loyal friend who, uncharacteristic for a feline, stayed perched on your shoulder.
"Really glad you came around Bande, or else I'd have to explain all of that to Father, and you know how that goes" You muttered.
"Explain what?" You heard his familiar voice immediately behind you, unexpectedly, causing you to jump and yelp, Bande leaping off of you and softly landing on the nearby table. "And how exactly do I get?"
"Gods!" You called out "Really?" He was an accomplished adventurer, but even with that and all his years, he often had the maturity more akin to human having just reached adulthood, including taking delight in your reactions. As you took a breath, you tried to dance away from the conversation.
"Nothing, my imagination got a hold of me is all." You continued, aiming for being plausibly true. "I was in a situation that in the moment seemed worse than it really was, but it's all taken care of."
"Well, good, cause I've got some work for you" He said as he held up a simple white envelope, held with a seal.
You let out a dramatic groan "I'm fully able of finding my own work, you know. Especially something better than hunting rat's out of the tavern basement." As you walk away, heading back to your office, Bedne flying alongside you.
"Well, you know, I wish you would" He retorted "You really don't seem to be in any kind of hurry to make a name for yourself or to get out there. Why, by the time I was your age, I'd already fought in the Triumvirate Wars."
"Well, can't blame me for their not having been one in the last century, and unless someone goes and assassinates the Shogun, probably not going to be another one anytime soon."
"You know what I mean, Molerre" He replied, angrily.
You turned around in a dramatic fashion "Yes, Father, I do. You've told me enough times." You snatched the letter out of his hand. "Honor the family legacy, make my ancestors proud. I just don't remember pride having a time limit."
Your father looked at you with his familiar cross gaze. Silent, you saw his mind stirring; for all of his skill at arms, he was less adept at words, and walked off before speaking again.
Warily, you opened the envelope to see exactly what manner of business you'd been unwittingly roped into...
