A Serious Talk

Brian and Bianca found a picnic table just out of the sight of the cabin, sat opposite each other, cracked open their beers and sat silently for a few minutes before Bianca spoke up.

"His name is Seth. He was an intern at my father's law firm during the spring semester. We started seeing each other right after he graduated and dated up until a couple weeks ago."

"Did your dad know?" Brian asked.

Bianca shook her head.

"No, and he never will. Wouldn't be fair to put him in that spot."

Bianca paused for a moment, to take a drink and Brian could see that she was starting to tear up. So, he got up and sat next next to her, with his back to the table and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. Bianca momentarily tipped her head to the side to brush her cheek against his hand, then continued.

"We got hot and heavy so fast. He bought me flowers, gifts. I fell hard, I really believed he was the one. I mean we were practically living together."

Bianca choked back her tears.

"I missed my period and the home pregnancy test came back positive."

Brian turned and looked at her but she kept looking straight ahead.

"I went through a whirlwind of emotions. I was scared, worried about finishing school... but I was also in love. And if he and I had a future together, maybe there was a place for that child too. So I made a doctor appointment. But, I decided to tell him. right away. I know now I went about it all wrong."

Brian reached around and placed his left hand on her right hand.

"We had a big date that night, the symphony. After that we made love. And I told him."

Brian could see that Bianca was about to lose it. She squeezed his hand and took a drink. She sat silently for a few moments then downed the rest of her beer. Brian set his beer, which he had only taken a couple of drinks from, in front of her. She accepted it, stared down into the bottle and took another drink.

"Nothing. That's what he said. Nothing. He got out of bed, got dressed. Pulled out his wallet and threw a thousand dollars on the nightstand and walked out."

"Holy fuck Bi!" he exclaimed as he wrapped his arms around her and she began to cry.

"I got all my stuff out of his apartment, thrown in a garbage bag, threw it in my car then sat and cried for 10 minutes. Of course I didn't take the money. I wanted to leave a nasty note but I figured I should do the same as he did and say nothing at all."

She buried her face in Brian's chest as he held her tight and cried for about a minute before pulling herself up and placing her head in his shoulder.

"Then I get to the doctor, and it turns out it was a false positive. No baby, no boyfriend."

"Oh Bi...."

"I spent two days in bed, barely eating. I was a mess. I still am."

"I didn't notice anything until we got here... until last night," Brian responded.

"That's because my best friend was holding me up... and he didn't even know it," she replied.

Brian could feel her warm breath on his neck. As he turned he could feel her squeeze his arms. His lips brushed against hers and they both froze for a few moments before Brian pulled her closer and kissed her.
