Chapter 14 by merkros merkros

Divided We...

A Heroic Dive

Neesta watched the action from a short distance. He couldn't quite exactly tell what was going on from this range, but what was evident was that the vast majority of the goblins were clearly distracted by some ruckus at the top of the hill. Seeing an opportunity, he nimbly crept from cover to cover as he quickly moved towards the back of the caravan. For a moment, he hesitated and peeked at the caravan to try and find the best place to infiltrate. It didn't take long before he saw it: A spot right behind the chained prisoners that was just guarded by two skirmishers. With his destination set, he carefully and quickly crept closer. Other than the two skirmishers, there were at least five goblins that could potentially see him guarding the prisoners. So being careful, he picked his way towards the point of least resistance. He kept his eyes locked onto the goblin guards, he quickly moved forward while looking for any sign that he was spotted. At any moment, one of them could turn and look at him and completely blow his cover and he needed to be ready to either bail out or rush forward depending on who saw him and how close he was.

Everything seemed to be going well as he quickly maneuvered to within a few steps of the rear guard when suddenly one of the goblins peered at him. It wasn't a matter of Neesta making noise that attracted them, but he had simply taken too long and wasted too much time creeping forward. His heart skipped a beat as the goblin's pupils narrowed and his eyes widened. It was only going to be a brief moment before the creature raised the alarm and brought a whole lot of problems down on his head.

Without a second thought, Neesta burst forward and dove at the goblin. He pulled his blades forward and aimed for the throat hoping to stifle any alarmed shout that they made. With a thud, both of his blades struck true. One pierced the greenskin through the larynx while the other blade landed lower into his lung. Neesta pulled back and the skirmisher releases a watery wheeze as the air in his lungs push through the blood filling the new holes in his body and as the goblin fell, he released an audible gurgling noise. Quickly reeling around, Neesta didn't wait to see if the other goblin heard the noise. The second skirmish turned towards the noise and could barely react as Neesta's blades also came down onto his throat. These ones landed cleanly and the goblin collapsed onto the ground with barely a sound.

With the two immediate threats out of the way, Neesta began quickly freeing prisoners. He approached the first woman and pressed a finger to his mouth. Motioning for her to be silent as he quickly undid her bonds. After that, he did the same to the second woman. This one was visibly pregnant and began looking around frantically for something to defend herself with as soon as her bindings were removed. Initially, Neesta had planned on just releasing a few women and fleeing before he was seen, but considering how extraordinarily well things were going, he simply continued to remove as many bonds as possible before being seen. Before he knew it, he had managed to release sixteen of the prisoners. Three of them were men. One was a burly man who was clearly some kind of ex-soldier and a younger boy who looked to be barely eighteen. No doubt being sold off to be some crude goblin's fucktoy. The final man was in a cage and it was clear that he has been used as a meal multiple times as parts of his body were cleanly cut and damaged. Most of the women were human, but there was also an elf, a forest sprite, and a halfling in the group. Overall three of them were visibly pregnant.

Neesta was weighing the option of fleeing before his antics were found, but he noticed something peculiar. Rather than fleeing in the face of danger, many of the freed civilians were searching for sticks, clubs, anything that they could use as a weapon. Before his eyes, the burly man grabbed the spear off of the dead goblin from earlier and finished the job of killing the first goblin who was still gurgling on the hillside. It looked as if things had quickly gone from a hopeless situation to something that just might be winnable. He could run away now, but with such numbers now turning against the goblins...He would look like a coward.

The fight was well and truly on now.
