Chapter 55 by Rabidwolf
What about the rest of the defenders?
5 Dead. 4 Wounded.
Shortly after Dan had headed upstairs Alma Morgan raced down them. On seeing her son alive and well she ran up to him and started kissing him passionately. Virgil caught in his moms embrace dropped the whiskey bottle that he had and it shattered on the floor.
"Oh I'm so happy your alive!" Alma exclaimed.
"I'm fine mom." Virgil reasured her.
"To think that I might have lost you."
Alma then became aware that people were watching. She then took hold of Virgil's hand and headed upstairs.
"We'll bein my room if anyone needs us," Alma called out, "but try not to disturb us."
As mother and son disapeared upstairs Caitlin smiled and shook her head.
"Guess those two are fine." Caitlin commented to Lisa.
Lisa, who was concerned about Billy and his being upset over his performance in the gunfight, never really heard what Caitlin had said. Worse was that Lisa had no idea what to do or say to cheer him up. Caitlin quickly deduced what was up with Lisa.
"Hey Billy," Caitlin called, "There's no shame in not killing someone."
Billy, who was now blushing, smiled shyly at Caitlin. Lisa silently mouthed thank you to Caitlin.
"Come on Billy," Lisa told Billy "Lets get upstairs and check in with the Doc and Beth."
Lisa then turned to Caitlin.
"Coming?" Lisa asked "Or are you going to leave the clearing up to me?"
"Fine." Caitlin answered smiling. "I'll help you out."
Lisa, Caitlin and Billy then proceeded up the stairs. On the second floor they past the body of sheriff Robert "Old Bob" Thorn. Billy was shocked to see the towns oldest resident lying there dead. On the stairs to the fourth floor they encountered the body of the guy who had followed Lisa down the ladder. Caitlin bent down to check him.
"Still alive." Caitlin informed the others. "Give me a hand and we'll get him to the doc."
Lisa and Caitlin carried the unconscious form up to the treatment room. In the treatment room Billy quickly ran up to and hugged his sister, while doc Monroe came over and quickly examined the patient that Lisa and Caitlin were supporting.
"He's fine." doc Monroe said matter of factly. "Just drop him anywhere."
The doc then returned to treating Pete.
"How bad is it?" Lisa asked the doc.
Doc Monroe paused in his efforts to remove a bullet from Pete.
"These two," doc said, indicating Davey and Pete, "should be fine with a bit of rest."
Lisa noticed Dan breath a sigh of relief at this news and wondered why the doc hadn't informed Dan already of the status of his workers. The doc continued.
"Your friend there," doc said indicating the guy that Lisa and Caitlin had just brought in, "a bucket of water should bring him round."
"Finally," doc said indicating a body on a bed in the corner. "He's alive right now, but I doubt he'll make it till tomorrow morning."
"What about the others?" Lisa asked unhappily.
"If they didn't make it to me then they are in no need of my services." the doc replied.
Lisa looked at Caitlin. Caitlin shook her head sadly.
"We've got 3 bodies up on the roof." Cailin explained. "Plus one guy out on the street and..."
Caitlin never finished her statement.
"...and the sheriff." Lisa finished. As soon as the words left her mouth Lisa regretted it.
"Old Bob is dead?" asked a shocked Beth.
Lisa simply nodded. Beth broke down and stared crying. Billy held onto his sister. Lisa went up to the Connors kids and embraced the pair of them. For the first time since arriving in Deadneck, Lisa regretted getting involved with the two kids.
The aftermath.
