“We’re stuck”

“We’ve stopped moving.” Ms. Hemlock stated blandly. Looking out the window, you find that she’s right.

“Press the button.” Ms. Pershing said nervously. You hit the button to the first floor. Nothing happens. You hit it again. The same occurs. You then try the open door button. Nothing changes. “Well that’s not too good.” You and Hemlock see the principal loosening up her collar. The heat sinks in a little deeper.

“The AC’s off. Things are only gonna get warmer.” You remind the two. You notice Hemlock taking off her jacket.

Ms. Pershing takes notice too. “What are you doing? Aren’t there a few more pressing things?”

“Despite our current predicament, I don’t believe anything outweighs our safety.” She said, continuing to roll up her shirt sleeves.

“Well I guess It’s only fair you’d know what you’re talking about. Moving into health teaching and all.” Pershing replies. “We still have a little time before classes are started. Let’s wait. Someone’s sure to notice.” A few minutes pass, the heat unrelenting. You can see both women gradually becoming more irritated by the heat. Even ‘The Ghost’ is gently tugging at her collar rather than standing still. You set down your backpack on the floor. Some more time passes and the passing period bell rings.

“That’d be the passing bell. Still figuring on them noticing an elevator gone quiet?” You say.

“No.” Your principal sighs, annoyed. “Gloria, do you have your phone?”

“No. It’s on my desk.” She answers blandly.

“Well mine is dead. I was hoping we could call for assistance from a janitor or something.” Then she makes eye contact with you. “Sam, you wouldn’t happen to have yours would you?”
