Women, sex and the Catholic Church: Florentina Holzinger's opera performance “Sancta” is set in this field of tension. In Stuttgart, it shocked parts of the audience and some spectators required medical treatment.

Despite an 18+ age rating and bold warnings for the revealing and bloody “Sancta” by Florentina Holzinger, the visitor service had to attend to a total of 18 people. Some of them had complained of nausea, said Sebastian Ebling, spokesman for the State Opera. In three cases, a doctor had to be called in. The “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” and the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” had previously reported.

Holzinger has been causing a stir in the theater world for years with her works, in which she stages female bodies in a radical and revealing manner, incorporates painful stunts and does not shy away from trash. In “Sancta”, the Austrian, born in 1986, brings lesbian love scenes to the stage with provocative clarity, ridicules Christian rituals and denounces the sexual oppression of women.
