Chapter 5

How do the castaways react?

"OH thank GOD!"

Most of the people from the ship are too shocked by the three brown skinned natives emerging from the foliage to do more than gawp in confusion, but the three have their arms spread wide and not holding weapons, though one of them IS armed.

It is Mrs Melissa Caldwell who points the situation in the right direction and sets the tone. "Oh thank GOD!" She exclaims. "The island is inhabited! You know what that means?" She asks of no one in particular, not waiting for an answer ether. "It means there are enough edible plants , fish, and potable water to sustain a stable population!" She cries joyously. "We wont starve to **** here, or die of dehydration!"

For about a half second no one reacts, then everyone starts to cheer, whoop, holler, and hug each other. Bella and James kiss, as do Kelly, Jessy, and Simon, while Wendy looks on all of this enviously. Chuck, Ronny and Gordon cheer the loudest, slapping each other on the back and chest bumping, while Jane grabs both of the crew members and pulls them into an unexpected bear-hug, which neither of them appreciate as much as she perhaps hoped.

Only Jona has the presence of mind to actually try to talk to the natives, and walks forwards arms spread and hands empty as well.

"Te āheitanga, koa ki te whakatau ia koutou ko ahau." He says, using one of about three phrases he knows in Maori, which he guesses might be a cognate to their language based on the armed woman's facial tattoos.

How do the natives respond to the excitement?
