Chapter 6

"And the Grammy goes to..."

"Katy Perry!"

The audience gasps. No one expected her to win this. And even Katy doesn't seem to know how to react at first. It's as if it didn't really happen.

But once things stop moving in slow motion, they switch to fast motion. And Katy is up off her chair, down the aisle, and on the stage giving an acceptance speech.

You're comfortable knowing that the camera isn't going to cut to you. You're not Katy's boyfriend. No one cares about you.

And then she's off the stage, whisked somewhere else, to a press room probably.

You take a deep breath. You're busy wondering what that exactly means for your night when someone jumps into Katy's seat next to you. It's a pretty girl with lovely pale skin and long red hair. She looks like she could be a model. Probably is, you think.

"Excuse me." you start to say. "This is..."

"I'm a seat filler" She answers with a smile.

Oh yeah. You forgot. That's a thing.

"So, you're Katy's date?" She asks. You wonder if seat fillers always make small conversation.

"Yup" you say with a shrug.

"Bummer for you." She says. You're not sure why. But you suspect.

"What do you mean?"

"Now that she won, she's not going to need consolation sex. Tonight she's going to be sleeping with her Grammy instead of you."

"How do you know..."

She gives you a sympathetic smile. "Katy was nominated two years ago and lost. I was here as a seat filler then too, with my boyfriend. Anyway, she saw my boyfriend in the lobby, decided he looked good to her and he was her consolation fuck."

"Your boyfriend?" You ask.

"Yup."

"Weren't you jealous?"

"Hell yes. Katy's gorgeous. What a lucky guy, right?"

"No" you say. "I meant jealous of..."

"Look," she interrupts. "Katy's gonna be doing press for the next hour. And then she's probably gonna forget you even exist. Why don't you stick with me tonight?"

You're not certain about this offer. You'd rather be with Katy. Who wouldn't? But this girl, who is really quite beautiful, makes a good point.

"What about your boyfriend?" You ask.

"From two years ago?" she responds. "you mean, ex-boyfriend."

What do you decide?
