Your food arrives. You and Taylor have burgers. Mary has the Diet Plate -- a burger patty and a scoop of cottage cheese over lettuce, with a cup of coleslaw. You order a slice of pie for dessert. Mary and Taylor share a single slice, which they finish quickly.

"Please have some of mine," you offer.

"I'd be delighted," Mary says. "They have the best pie here." She plunges her fork into the remains of your pie and takes a bite. "Mmmmm."

"Better than ours?" Taylor asks.

Mary licks the crumbs off her fork. "Well, let me just say the best pie that comes on a plate," Mary says.

Last night your dessert was Taylor's pie.

"I'd have to agree," you say.

"Taylor was going to come visit at my place before work," Mary says. "Would you like to join us?"

"Yes, I'd love to see, ah, your place," you say. You remember Taylor said there was some kind of special favor Mary would appreciate. You look over at your sister, but you don't catch any signals in her face.

You pick up the bill. Ten minutes later, you're at Mary Forbes' double-wide trailer. It's decorated sweetly, almost to the point of kitsch, with GOD BLESS OUR HOME and LOVE MAKES A HOME among the prominent slogans. You're sitting with Mary and Taylor at Mary's kitchen table, drinking sweet iced tea. For some people, it was an all-year drink, even now in the winter.
